Shaquille O’Neal knows what it takes to be great. He won four NBA titles, three Finals MVPs, and one regular-season MVP. He also became a global icon with his charisma and off-court ventures. But he didn’t do it without facing criticism. He had to overcome doubters and haters throughout his career.

Now, as an analyst, he wants to help today’s players do the same. O’Neal is not shy about giving his opinions on current NBA stars. He often challenges them to improve their game and win championships. He says he does it out of love, not hate.

I’m just giving advice. If you want my advice, cool. If you don’t, that’s fine with me,” O’Neal told The Volume Sports. “It happens, it’s part of the game. A lot of the times I’m saying something because I’m trying to help you out. If you can’t see that, that’s not my problem.

O’Neal speaks from experience. He faced criticism for his free-throw shooting, his weight, and his lack of championships early in his career. He didn’t let that stop him. Shaq worked hard, played with great teammates, and won four rings. He learned how to handle criticism from his mentors, including his mother and his former coach Phil Jackson.

The great Dr. Lucille O’Neal, who happens to be my mother, told me, ‘Before you get upset at criticism, make sure there’s no truth to it.’ The only criticism of me was, ‘Oh, he didn’t work hard enough.’ Well guess what? I got four rings,” O’Neal said in an interview with The Ringer.

O’Neal hopes that his advice will inspire the current generation of players to reach their full potential and achieve greatness. He believes that by stepping up their game and winning titles, they can silence the critics and earn respect. That’s what he did in his career, and that’s why he is one of the greatest players of all time.
