Shaquille O’Neal is one of the greatest players to ever play the game. He was a monster in the paint and was one of the most dominant forces the league has ever seen. As a result, he was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016. Right now, however, it appears that he believes one of his former teammates deserves to be inducted as well.
The teammate is Robert Horry. Horry is a seven-time NBA champion. He was with Shaq and the Lakers during their three-peat era. Despite not averaging much throughout his career, Horry was a man for the big moments. He was used to stepping up in big moments, especially during the post-season. He played with 4 teams throughout his career and hit clutch shots for all of them.
In response to a Twitter graphic asking whether Robert Horry should be in the Hall of Fame, O’Neal retweeted the post and wrote:
The answer is HMF YES, and yes I’m yelling.
Yet, when you examine Horry’s career statistics, they fall short of Hall of Fame standards. He maintained an average of 7.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists throughout his career. While these are respectable figures, they may not necessarily meet the Hall of Fame criteria. Nonetheless, some might make the case that his numerous championships make up for that. The final decision on whether Horry will be inducted into the Hall of Fame remains to be seen.
Robert Horry’s clutch plays
Robert Horry was known for making some of the most clutch plays in NBA history. He consistently delivered when his team needed him the most, particularly during his tenure with the Lakers.
Horry’s legendary clutch performance was perhaps best exemplified in Game 4 of the 2002 Western Conference finals. The Lakers were trailing the Kings 2-1, with the score at 99-97 in favor of the Kings. Despite the odds favoring the Kings, Horry seized the moment, sinking a game-winning three-pointer and securing the victory for the Lakers.
Indeed, that iconic shot by Robert Horry had a profound impact on NBA history. Without it, the Kings might have gone down 3-1, potentially altering the Lakers’ quest for a three-peat. Shaquille O’Neal’s support for Horry’s Hall of Fame induction is well-founded, given the pivotal role Horry played in shaping the course of basketball history with that clutch shot.
