Former NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal opened up about the harsh conditions he faced growing up. The 4-time NBA Champ was born into a military family that constantly moved from one place to another. He revealed many more things in his upcoming documentary film series ‘SHAQ’ on HBO which is set to release on 23rd November.
Shaquille O’Neal, who dominated the league for more than 16 seasons, spoke in this week’s issue of the ‘PEOPLE’ magazine, where he said, “Every time I went to a place, I made my name quickly, I’d find out who ‘the guy’ was, study him, and I’d beat him up. Take his spot. Everybody knew who I was.”
Shaq added, “I almost killed a kid. They showed me the jail, I shifted everything into becoming the class clown. Just to make people like me. It was [another] mechanism for [dealing with my insecurity]. I wasn’t a leader yet. I was a follower on the wrong path.”
To those who are unaware, O’Neal is also an NBA Hall of Famer with four NBA championships, three Finals MVP awards, and an Olympic gold medal.
Shaquille O’Neal’s illustrious NBA career
Shaquille O’Neal started playing college basketball for the LSU Tigers and was drafted by the Orlando Magic as the first overall pick in the 1992 NBA draft. He quickly rose to fame and became one of the best centers in the league, winning Rookie of the Year in 1992–93 and leading his team to the 1995 NBA Finals. After four years with the Magic, O’Neal signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Lakers.
There he won three consecutive championships in 2000, 2001, and 2002 with them and then after joining the Miami Heat in 2004, his won his fourth NBA championship in 2006. Diesel was named to 14 All-time NBA teams and three NBA All-Defensive Team selections.
He also has many accolades to his name, such as he is one of only three players to win the NBA MVP, All-Star Game MVP, and Finals MVP awards in the same year in 2002.
Lastly Shaquille O’Neal was elected into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016. He was also honored as one of the league’s greatest players by being named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.
