Stephen A. Smith, Beyonce, and Rihanna
Stephen A. Smith is one of those people on national television, who is precise and pinpointed with his words to get his message conveyed. However, the ESPN analyst also has a unique quality to balance his criticisms of players and artists with genuine compliments. Clearly, Stephen was not at his best when he lauded his opinion about Rihanna performing at the 2023 Superbowl. Smith was on Sherri Shepherd’s show.
Shepherd asked Smith, “Are you excited for this half-time show?” the New York-born already had the face of his answer. He said that although RiRi is spectacular, she was not on the same level as Beyoncé. “I don’t wanna say I’m not excited. She’s fantastic,” Smith told Sherri on Wednesday. He added, “She’s a lot of things. She’s spectacular, actually.” And congratulations on new momma-hood. There’s one thing she’s not: She ain’t Beyoncé,” he added.
His comments definitely drew a lot of mixed noises from the crowd. However, Stephen A. cleared his take on the matter. While reminding everybody of the last time Beyonce performed at the Superbowl with Bruno Mars and Coldplay, he said there are levels. “Rihanna’s music is fantastic. She’s great. She’s a sister. I love her dearly. I listen to her music. I’m gonna support her until the cows come home,” Smith cleared it up. “I’m just telling you. For me, there’s Beyoncé and there’s everybody else. Just like there was Michael Jackson and there’s everybody else,” he remarked.
Stephen A. Smith apologizes to Rihanna for his comments on RiRi performing at the Superbowl
The ESPN analyst uploaded a video on his social media account that showed him owning up to his miscalculation about his comments about the 9 Grammy Award winner. He cleared that while he should have been more careful about opening his mouth, she was strictly speaking as a fan. “I want you to know you’re a superstar, you’re sensational, you’re spectacular. You’re no joke and you are a worthy person to be doing Super Bowl halftime show,” Stephen A. spoke to Rihanna in the video. He also added, “I just think that Beyonce is the greatest performer out there today.”
There is no second opinion that Rihanna is one of the greatest artists who ever set foot on the stage. For some, she might not be on the same level as Beyonce, but Rihanna is in a league of her own. Although the relationship between Smith and RiRi is unknown, it was a good move from the sports analyst to come out openly and apologize for the misappropriation of his statement.
