Skip’s back at it! Bayless criticizes King James as they fall short against Luka Doncic’s Mavericks on Christmas Day showdown

LeBron James and Skip Bayless

In Game 2 of the NBA’s Christmas Day schedule, LeBron James and Luka Doncic put on a display as the Dallas Mavericks defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 124–115. Despite his best efforts, James was unable to prevent the Mavericks from outscoring the visiting Lakers in the third quarter. Dallas set a Christmas Day record with 51 points, which proved to be too much for Los Angeles to handle.

Luka Doncic will get most of the attention for his effort of 32 points, 9 rebounds, and 9 assists. The Mavericks All-Star got plenty of assistance on the offensive end as Tim Hardaway Jr. and Christian Wood combined for 56 points in the victory. On the other hand, LeBron put up the kind of superstar statistics we’ve come to expect over the years. He finished with 38 points, six rebounds, and five assists. But the rest of the Lakers’ lineup was unable to provide him with the necessary assistance to carry the load on the road.

Dallas moves up to 18-16 on the year with the victory, while Los Angeles drops to 13-20. With the loss came criticism from Skip Bayless who said, “How embarrassing was it for LeBron’s Lakers that they gave up the most points in any quarter all NBA season in the 3rd quarter at Dallas on Christmas – FIFTY-ONE!”

The Mavericks’ performance against the Lakers in the first half was at an all-time low. They had a field goal percentage of 39.5 and a 3-point percentage of 22.7, and they trailed an Anthony Davis-less Lakers squad by 11 points. Dallas was going to make a comeback given how horribly things went in the first two quarters. But nobody could have anticipated the 51-point avalanche the Mavericks delivered on the Lakers. They utilized a 20-5 run to lead 82-65 with two minutes remaining in the third quarter.

By the end of the third quarter, Dallas had a 94-75 advantage. Moreover, their 51-point stint was a Christmas Day record, equaling a Mavericks mark for most points in a quarter. These were the most points scored in a quarter this season. Nine three-pointers, four of which were made by Tim Hardaway Jr., who scored 16 of his 26 points in the third quarter, are to blame for everything. In addition to participating in the third-quarter celebrations, Doncic scored 13 of his 32 points and dished out six assists over those 12 minutes.
