Ayesha Curry has been by her husband Stephen Curry’s side since he entered the NBA in 2009. She has witnessed his rise to stardom as he led the Golden State Warriors to four championships and became a two-time MVP. She has also shared their family life with the world, especially their eldest daughter Riley, who stole the show at several post-game press conferences when she was a toddler.

But now, Ayesha Curry says she regrets exposing Riley to the public and social media so much when she was younger. In an exclusive interview with Insider, she revealed that she and her husband did not realize the impact that their decision would have on their daughter and their family.

When the social media thing started, nobody knew what that was going to become,” Curry told Insider. “If we had known back in the day just how chaotic it would make life, I don’t think we would’ve done it. But we were just genuinely living our lives back then. And we thought, ‘This is our kid. We’re bringing our kid along.’”

Riley, who is now 10 years old, became an instant sensation when she joined her dad for a post-game press conference in 2015 when she was only 2. She also celebrated with her parents and her younger sister Ryan, who was born that year, at a post-game celebration in 2016.

Curry said that she and her husband were just proud and happy parents who wanted to include their kids in their special moments. They did not expect the media and the fans to fall in love with Riley and to follow her every move. “We didn’t realize how much people would latch onto her and how much they would love her,” Curry said. “And we’re so grateful for that. But at the same time, it’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is our baby.’”

Curry and her husband have since welcomed another child, Canon, who is now 4 years old. Curry said that she has learned from her experience with Riley and that she is more careful about keeping her kids off social media and away from online noise.

She said none of her kids have social-media accounts or cell phones and that she monitors what they see and hear online. Curry said she wants to protect them from any false or negative information about their parents or their family. “I don’t want them to see anything that’s not true or anything that’s negative,” Curry said. “I want them to form their own opinions and their own views of themselves and of us.

Curry also said that she hopes that her kids will follow their own passions and dreams, whether they are related to basketball or not. She said that she and her husband support them in whatever they choose to do.
