Zion Williamson was touted as the next big star entering the 2019 NBA draft. Such was the hype, that many were labeling him to take over from LeBron James as the face of basketball.
The semi-finals of the NBA In-Season Tournament was supposedly the game where Williamson could showcase his game against James. That did not happen. Infact analysts watched him labor around the court in the game. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith called Williamson for his health and his desire. Stephen A., speaking with Shannon Sharpe on his show “First Take” said;
I am not exaggerating. I'm quoting people, you got chefs in New Orleans that love him, they are looking for him--The word on Zion Williamson is that he'll eat the table.
The veteran analyst then went on to question what is actually going on with Williamson.
Zion Williamson has been battling injuries for the past two seasons. He has not been able to showcase his full ability on the floor yet. Everyone was waiting for this matchup between him and James to finally see him come about. With a disappointing 13 point 2 rebound outing for the New Orleans Pelicans, fans and analysts want to see more from him.
Analysts such as Stephen A. Smith believe Williamson does not have the drive to be the best player. He called out Williamson’s pride, discipline and focus during the show. If he wants to be considered one of the best in the NBA, Smith thinks Williamson should get his act together. Everyone has seen small glimpses of Williamson’s elite play.
Zion Williamson admits he was laid back in his approach against LeBron James-led Lakers
Williamson was asked about his play during the post-game press conference. The 23-year-old agreed that he needs to be better at every aspect of the game. The power forward acknowledges that he needs to step up and be the leader of the team. His energy has to be up so that his teammates can follow that.
I got to be better. I got to be more aggressive, finding my shot. I got to do more things to get my team going. I think I was too laid-back tonight, and I just can't do that. And defensively I got to be better.Zion Williamson post loss to Lakers
Consequently, Williamson has been critiqued time and again for his fitness and drive for the game. Some even questioned if he wants to play at a high level. It seems analysts are asking those questions again and again. Fitness should be the primary importance for a player who has only played in 63% of his games since his debut in the league.
The fans and the New Orleans Pelicans definitely want to see the best of Williamson. And they are hoping he does listen to them and work on his process.
