Stephen A. Smith calls Luka and Kyrie the scariest duo

The Dallas Mavericks surprised NBA fans when they signed Kyrie Irving last year. Till then, considering the teams’ stats, many hoped that the team would add a key player to get Luka Doncic some help. However, the fans did not expect Irving’s addition and also had second thoughts if the duo would work well together. But the pair of guards have now proven these thoughts wrong.

Kyrie Irving‘s addition has only benefitted the Mavericks and Luka Doncic. Keeping the player’s absences aside this year, Irving has only scored and reduced the weight on Doncic’s shoulders. The duo’s performance against the Denver Nuggets on Sunday is a perfect example of that. In the close game, Doncic tied the game with a deep three-pointer and Irving scored the unreal game-winning shot.

The battle between the two duos of Mavericks and the Nuggets was being discussed on ESPN’s First Take. Host Stephen A. Smith shared his thoughts on the scarier duo between Mavs’ Luka-Kyrie and Nuggets’ Jokic-Murray. Here is what he had to say:

I'm gonna go with Kyrie and Luka the scariest. I didn't say better. I know Jokic and Murray are better. But Kyrie and Luka, when you consider what they are capable of doing.
Stephen A. Smith said

Smith believes that the Mavs duo is unstoppable. He added:

When those two get rolling, you can't stop them… There's no answer for them.
Stephen A. Smith added

Smith talked about the difficulty level of setting up defense for the duo. Considering Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray won a championship together, Smith counts them as a better duo than Doncic and Irving.

Gregg Popovich says Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving played like Hall of Famers

On several occasions now the Mavericks duo has received praise for their chemistry and winning ability together. The duo received one more pat on their back from another big and respected name in the NBA. Last month, they had a special performance against the San Antonio Spurs. In the 116-93 win, Irving scored 34 points and Doncic scored 27 points.

Spurs Hall of Famer coach Gregg Popovich praised Doncic and Irving after the game. Pop said:

I thought Luka [Doncic] and Kyrie [Irving], they played like Hall of Fame players, They were fantastic. We couldn't do anything with them.
Gregg Popovich said

Getting acknowledged by a coach who is considered one of the greatest to ever do it is certainly worth adding to the resume.

Irving’s return from injury seems to be the factor that might shift the Mavericks’ season. Considering the team is now at the top of the play-in rankings, Irving’s help to Doncic could benefit the team in the playoffs. Doncic who is currently in the MVP race might still have a chance to take his team at the top with Irving’s contribution.
