Stephen A. Smith, a long-time iconic ESPN analyst, recently joined NBA star Paul George on his “Podcast with P” in its latest episode. He reflected upon his career as an analyst and had a few regrets about his comments. This included his infamous rant about draft bust Kwame Brown. Smith, an analyst who had built his career providing his infamous takes on players, trades, and the NBA, expressed his opinions on DeMarcus Cousins, having a talk show with Kevin Garnett, etc.
Smith has been one of the most entertaining analysts to watch, which is why he has had such a long career on ESPN. Smith isn’t one to shy away from expressing his disregard for players, be it a G-league bench player or LeBron James, especially regarding topics he feels strongly about. This has led to him having his fair share of supporters and harsh critics.
Some of his most iconic rants include his beef with Kyrie Irving, ripping into the LA Clippers for blowing a 3-1 lead to the Denver Nuggets in the bubble, and so on. He is a person who stands tall on the mountains he builds and isn’t one to be pressured into taking back his views.
This is why it was surprising when on the podcast with Paul, he talks about his regrets for his hateful comments towards Brown. When the Lakers traded for Pau Gasol in 2008, there was drama surrounding the package that the Lakers had sent to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for him. In hindsight, this trade was a massive win as Kobe Bryant and Gasol went on to win back-to-back titles, but there was skepticism surrounding it at the time.
On the other hand, Smith loved the trade and saw it as a huge win. He went on to rip into Kwame, his playstyle, and the character. He even had a few calls from NBA players after, who had told him it was not okay for him to do so.
This never slowed Smith down, as later on, he even had an entire segment dedicated to how much of a failure Brown was in his stint as a part of the NBA.
NBA Twitter SOUNDS OFF on Stephen A. Smith’s appearance in “Podcast with P”
NBA fans joined in on Smith’s comments in the podcast, expressing their distaste for the ESPN analyst, calling him a “fraud. They expressed how a man who has never played a day of basketball in his life shouldn’t be provided with such a large platform where he is freely able to diss other players and franchises, even going so far as to insult his dressing sense. While expressing his regret, Smith backed himself up, saying, “I did mean it. I ain’t gonna sit here and tell you I ain’t mean the s**t I said.“
Here are some of the reactions from Twitter:
Smith has a long and illustrious career as an analyst and is one of the few affiliated with the same network for years-ESPN. Look no further than Shannon Sharpe, leaving his iconic show alongside Skip Bayless. Smith still has a while to go before he hangs up the mic, and is sure to garner a few more critics and fans along the way and tick the feathers of up-and-coming future stars and players with his hot takes and opinions.
