Los Angeles Lakers have been struggling to find their footing in the 2022-23 NBA season. They have won two of their 10 games so far this season. Earlier this offseason Stephen A. Smith had proposed that the Lakers should trade LeBron James. For the analyst, it was only LeBron who had value in the market. On Tuesday, Stephen A. again came up with the proposal but he went a step ahead and proposed the Anthony Davis trade as well along with Bron.
Speaking with Tim Legler and Keyshawn Johnson on ESPN First Take Stephen A. Smith said, “Forget Russell Westbrook for a second, I trade LeBron and Anthony Davis.” His proposal did not come as a surprise to the other analysts. According to Stephen A., “The Lakers ain’t going nowhere.” As per Smith, the Lakers do not have many assets in the future to rebuild the team when LeBron is gone. He said, “If you want to think about the future and you only got first-round picks in 27 and 29. You know what they ain’t gonna do it, we know it.”
When Keyshawn brought about the fact that it is not possible for the Lakers to get shooters around LeBron, Stephen A. Smith had another plan, he replied, “I got to be honest with you… LeBron has extreme value still because he is box office.” He added, “I would get a bunch of young thoroughbreds some picks and I will move forward that way because this is a sinking ship, it’s not going to elevate, it’s the Titanic. It’s slowly but surely… going down.”
Seeing how the Lakers are performing right now it appears true that they are not going far this season. Darvin Ham’s new coaching job has been even more difficult especially when LeBron and Davis, both are struggling. Smith’s proposal might seem wild and unrealistic not only because of the Lakers’ culture but also because there are not many teams that would break up their young roaster to acquire LeBron at this point of his career.
Stephen A. Smith thinks the Lakers are not going anywhere this season because they can’t shoot
It is not breaking news that the Lakers so far in this season have been far from what was expected of them in the offseason. They have lost three consecutive games to Utah Jazz and Cleaveland Cavaliers and face the Clippers in the next tip-off. The Lakers as a team have been shooting below 30% from the 3-point range which often cost them games. At this point, it is hard to think of the Lakers going into the playoffs.
Highlighting the Lakers’ biggest problem, Stephen A. pointed out that the Lakers “have been more competitive defensively, they do have athletes, they do have dudes who can ball a little bit. We get that, but the problem is, they can’t shoot to save their d*mn life.” He was on point about the shooting every team needs to have in order to win games. He noted, “This is in year 2022 where game has evolved and changed so significantly that you have to be able to shoot.“
Stephen A. did not even let LeBron off the hook and called him out for his poor performance in past few games. Speaking of LeBron’s 3-point shooting he said, “He is shooting 21% from the 3-point range. He has been awful,” According to Stephen A. it is very clear, “the results won’t change until they get brothers that can put it in the hole from long range.“
