The first pitch of the game in baseball is considered ceremonious. It marks the beginning of the game and isn’t often thrown by a celebrity, a popular personality or a guest of honour. For the match between the Blue Jays and the Yankees last night, ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith was given this honor. As Smith stepped up to pitch, he looked confident of his throwing abilities. If only his confidence in the throw had matched the outcome of it.

Smith absolutely butchered the throw. It landed on the ground a couple of feet away from the home plate. When Smith was asked about his atrocious throw, he had this to say, “I was disgusted with myself, man. Let me tell you something, I was warming up down there, I was throwing strikes from 60 feet away. And I got on that mound, and it looked like it was a mile away. I said, ‘What the hell am I doing here?’ There’s no excuse. It was a choke job. I should do better than that. Stephen A. choked a little bit. I just did. It was straight, but damn it, I can do better than that.”

Fellow sports analyst Bart Scott took his chance to poke fun at Smith saying, “[Stephen A. Smith] embarrassed us all in front of everybody.”

Smith’s lackluster throw was one to remember for the ages. Fans commented on the irony of the situation. Smith who often criticizes sports players himself, is not at the receiving end of the criticism. Smith who was embarrassed at his throw stated that he feared what other sports analysts would say about his throw, saying things like, “God, I don’t even want to think about what [Chris] “Mad Dog” Russo is going to say about me.

Horrible first pitches as seen with Stephen A. Smith are not uncommon

In 2014, the baseball world witnessed what was perhaps one of the worst first pitches of all time. The day was May 27, and fans were looking forward to a game of baseball between the New York Mets and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The celebrity charged with the task of throwing the first pitch was famous rapper, 50 Cent.

50 Cent stepped up to pitch. He was all smiles. He took a breath, steadying himself for the pitch; he then proceeded to throw it 12 feet to the left of home plate. In what can only be described as one of the most horrific attempts of missing the target, 50’s pitch went flying to the left, baffling cameramen standing there.

It appears fans haven’t forgotten this pitch. After Smith’s historic throw on Friday, many fans were quick to comment that the one saving grace of Smith’s pitch was that it was aimed towards the right spot. Regardless, fans have found comedic gold and it’s safe to say that anytime Smith comments on a baseball topic, this video will be brought up.
