The sinking of the Titanic in 1912 was one of the most devastating maritime disasters in history, claiming more than 1,500 lives. More than a century later, the wreck of the legendary ship still attracts curiosity and fascination from explorers and enthusiasts. But not everyone shares that sentiment, especially Stephen A. Smith.

Smith had some harsh words for the five people who died while attempting to visit the Titanic site on a submersible vessel. Smith, who hosts The Stephen A. Smith Show, expressed his disbelief and anger at the decision of the passengers to embark on such a risky and unnecessary expedition.

It’s a tragedy. But certain things in life, dare I say, are unnecessary. … And by the way, when are we going to get over the Titanic? It’s a ship that sunk. … How many lives were lost? Was it a thousand? I mean, what’s up with us?” Smith said on his show on Friday. “I’m not laughing. I’m not joking. I’m not making light of people who passed away. God rest their wonderful souls. But forgive me, that curiosity does kill a cat. Why are you that damn curious?

Smith went on to add, “What in God’s name would make you think it’s okay to get in a submersible? What is there to see? Investigate what? Who does not know that a human being does not need to be two miles below sea level in the ocean.

Smith’s comments came after OceanGate Expeditions, the company running the trip, confirmed through an official statement on Thursday the death of the five passengers who were on board the Titan submersible. The vessel descended into the waters of the Atlantic Ocean to view the wreckage of the RMS Titanic, one of the best-known ocean liners in history, on Sunday.

The Titan lost communication with the mainland less than two hours after departing and it has been confirmed that tragedy struck after a debris field was found near the Titanic on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday. A former Navy doctor who specialized in undersea medicine and radiation health has revealed what would have happened during the Titanic Five’s tragic final moments before their vessel suffered a ‘catastrophic implosion’.

It would have been so sudden, that they wouldn’t even have known that there was a problem, or what happened to them. It’s like being here one minute, and then the switch is turned off. You’re alive one millisecond, and the next millisecond you’re dead,” the former Navy doctor said.
