Warriors coach Steve Kerr asks his team to take lessons from Tennis for ‘better control’ in matches

Steve Kerr and Jordan Poole
Steve Kerr’s Golden State Warriors secured an important win on Sunday against the Toronto Raptors by beating them 126-110. With this game, they ended their 3-game losing streak and are now placed 11th in the Western Conference. This victory comes at a time when their star player Stephen Curry is injured with a shoulder ailment and could take an entire month before seeing any action on the court.
Managing a team is indeed a herculean task especially when one is coaching and managing the Golden State Warriors, Steve Kerr in a recent post-game conference spoke about how he shows the team different sports to keep them thinking of new ideas, this is where Adam Laskaris asked Kerr what sport he shows them and why. To which Kerr said, “In tennis you can tell who has control of the point by the depth of the players… if you’re pressuring (in basketball) & get them starting their offense well above the 3pt line you’re controlling the possession.”
Further reacting to Jordan Poole’s game against the Raptors in their latest victory, Kerr added, “He’s played a lot of great games for us. If it’s not the best, it’s definitely one of the few bests, He was great at both ends. His defense was excellent. I thought he was patient offensively, got us into our offense well. He just set the tone. He just carried us.”
Of course, the Golden State Warriors won’t succeed without Stephen Curry. But in light of how Jordan Poole performed on Sunday, it suddenly seems much more likely that the defending champions will be able to weather the storm of losing their franchise player.

Steve Kerr’s Warriors thrash Toronto Raptors

In Golden State Warriors’ exhilarating 126-110 victory over the struggling Toronto Raptors, Poole exploded for a career-high 43 points and six assists, scoring from all three levels of the floor while also involving his teammates. He combined quick mid-range jumpers with forceful attacks all the way to the rim to shoot 14 of 23 overall and 5 of 11 from beyond the arc.
Poole profited from Toronto’s overly aggressive game plan as well, identifying shooters early when he noticed numerous levels of defense. No one could’ve predicted Poole to play this well given his early-season difficulties, which unnoticeably aided in Golden State’s disastrous 3-7 start. Before his current hot play, he began to shake those off.
However, during the past two and a half weeks, Poole has elevated his play to the levels that during the Warriors’ championship run made him appear to be one of the league’s most explosive playmakers.
Over his previous nine games, Poole has averaged 26.7 points and 4.4 assists on amazing 61.7% true shooting efficiency—numbers he almost certainly won’t keep up for the rest of the season. But while Curry is injured? Golden State would have a shot to hold on until the returning MVP of the Finals if Jordan Poole were to keep performing like a superstar.
