Jordan Poole is set to return to the Chase Center for the first time since being traded to the Washington Wizards. The former Golden State Warriors guard was traded after an altercation with Draymond Green during the season apparently destroyed the chemistry in the locker room.
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr was asked by The Athletic’s Anthony Slater about his opinion regarding the whole Jordan Poole transfer situation. Kerr stated;
I look back at that, and I hate that it happened. We could have done better for sure. I just hate the way it ended for Jordan here, because he is a huge success story. But I hate the way it ended.
The Warriors admitted that the Green-Poole incident was a contributing factor towards their playoff exit last season. The incident and the subsequent leaked video showing the altercation were causing growing distrust among the whole organization.
During the 2021-22 season, Jordan Poole got considerable playing time with superstar guard Klay Thompson out injured. Starting 51 games, Poole averaged 18.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 4 assists to help the Golden State Warriors to third place in the Western Conference. During the championship-winning playoff run, Poole averaged 17 points per game off the bench.
The altercation, or rather a punch from Draymond Green changed the course of the Warriors 2022-23 season. Many believed the Warriors could be back-to-back champions. However, fans, analysts, and even the team themselves admitted that the altercation changed their season for the worse.
How have Poole and the Warriors fared after their divorce?
Jordan Poole is having an average year for the Washington Wizards. He is averaging 17.2 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists this season. However, this level of play has not helped the Wizards. They are currently the third-worst team in the league with a 5-22 record. Poole’s game has also been questioned several times by analysts.
The Warriors are also having a disappointing season so far. They are currently 13-14 and out of the playoff race in the heavily loaded Western Conference, at least for the time being. Add to that, the fact that Draymond Green is currently suspended indefinitely. This is his third suspension of the season, which has come alongside a noted drop in the level of the Warriors’ other veterans as well.
Hence, Poole might as well have made the Warriors contenders had he still been playing for them. Steve Kerr definitely thinks so, and regrets having to send the player away under difficult circumstances.
