There are only a handful of players that can be compared to Michael Jordan. One of those players is ‘The Chosen One’ LeBron James. Steve Kerr, current coach of the Golden State Warriors, knows both these gentlemen very well. He was Jordan’s teammate for 5 seasons (1993-1998) and won 3 NBA Championships with him. With respect to James, Kerr faced off against him and his Cleveland Cavaliers as head coach of the Warriors in the 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 NBA Finals winning three out of those four matchups.
While Kerr may have the upper hand against James, that hasn’t stopped the former Chicago Bulls sharpshooter from acknowledging his greatness. Back in 2018, when the Warriors swept the Cavaliers 4-0 in the NBA Finals, Kerr was doing media post-Game 4 and was asked about how tough it is to make game plans for and play against James considering the amount of pressure he puts on the defense.
Kerr was quick to respond and said, “Well he’s terrifying. He really is. Every time he comes down the court, getting downhill, you just know he’s either going to get to the rim or he’s going to find one of his shooters for a 3-point shot. He’s added the 3-point threat.“
“When we came here three years ago in the first meeting, we weren’t fearful of his shot. We were fearful of his power and his penetration and his passing, but now you fear everything. I think maybe the greatest testament to LeBron is that five years ago he was one of the top-five players of all time. From five years ago till now, it seems like he’s 10 times better because he’s added so much skill to his game,” Kerr added.
He then said that he gets asked all the time about the comparisons between James and Michael Jordan and who thinks is better but according to him, they are the 2 best players that he has ever witnessed. “However you wanna rank them, they’re right there together,” added Kerr.
Kerr and James faced off once again last season in the playoffs
Kerr and his Golden State Warriors took on James and the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round of the 2023 Western Conference playoffs in which James got the better of Kerr, with the Lakers winning the series 4-2. It was the very first time in the Steve Kerr era that the Warriors lost a playoff series before the NBA Finals.
James was the finals MVP back in 2016 when the Cavaliers completed the historic 3-1 comeback in the finals to win the franchise’s first championship in NBA history. Such was the impact of the loss that the Warriors added Kevin Durant the next season to contend with James and the Cavs. Now in 2023, James was once again responsible for the Warriors losing, this time much earlier than the NBA Finals.
