“Draft room erupted!” Steve Nash ALMOST ruined Stephen Curry’s fairytale career in Golden State Warriors

During an interview on ShowTime Basketball, the current head coach of the Golden State Warriors, Steve Kerr, and Steph Curry discussed the period when Kerr served as the GM and part-owner of the Phoenix Suns and their connection with a young Stephen Curry.

Steve Kerr recounted his endeavors to draft Steph Curry in the 2009 NBA draft during his tenure as the Suns’ GM. Eager to bring a championship to the Suns, he envisioned the young Curry, a fellow three-point shooter, as the player who could potentially achieve this goal, despite the challenges faced in his pursuit of success.

Steve Kerr recalled the encounter

We were looking at Steph and seeing Steve Nash, the next version. We tried to trade for him, and we thought we had a deal the night before the draft. It wasn’t completed, but it was basically a discussion over the phone that we thought was done. So when he fell to seven, our draft room erupted because we thought the deal was in place and Steph was going to be a Phoenix Sun. And it didn’t happen, it fell through

Kerr’s wish came true when he joined forces with Curry as the head coach in 2014, leading the Golden State Warriors to glory. Together, they secured four championships for the Warriors between 2015 and 2022, with victories in Kerr’s rookie coaching season in 2015, followed by triumphs in 2017, 2018, and the most recent one in 2022.

The Steve Kerr Legacy

Steve Kerr achieved a historic feat as the first head coach in NBA history to guide his team to 67 or more wins in three consecutive seasons. Under his stewardship, the Golden State Warriors entered their most successful era, reaching six NBA finals and triumphing in four. The 2015-2016 Warriors team, under Kerr’s leadership, set an unprecedented record by winning 73 games, breaking the longstanding record for the most wins in an NBA season.

These remarkable achievements were realized in collaboration with the dynamic trio of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. Despite facing challenges in the current season, it’s evident that Steve Kerr’s legacy continues to resonate throughout the league.
