“We wouldn’t have done any better” Steve Nash showered with support by Warriors head coach following his abrupt termination with the Nets
Steve Kerr and Steve Nash
Steve Nash and the Brooklyn Nets have parted ways. The franchise made their decision to fire the coach after the side’s game with the Indiana Pacers. Even though the Nets improved their record to 2-6 it wasn’t enough to keep the stakeholders happy, and hence Nash was thrown out the door.
Before the defending champions’ Tuesday game against the Miami Heat, Steve Kerr defended Nash who was a consultant with the Golden State Warriors from 2015 until he was recruited by the Brooklyn Nets. He said, “I feel for Steve. I think he has all the qualities to be a brilliant coach.” While singling out Erik Spoelstra as another coach who had a stable organization, “We’re really lucky. Throw either one of us in that situation and we wouldn’t have done any better than Steve. And that’s the truth.”
With Kyrie Irving juggling injuries, vaccine denial, anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and his adamant opposition to heliocentrism, Brooklyn’s situation was anything but solid. A month into his coaching job Irving further dissed Nash by declaring, “I don’t really see” the Nets needing a head coach. Durant begged Nash to be fired this summer but failed to get his requests fulfilled.
Perhaps Nash wasn’t quite ready to be promoted from his mostly unimportant job with the Warriors into one of the most prominent head-coaching positions in sports. There is no disputing Kerr’s assertion that any coach regardless of their experience would find it difficult to work under the continual turmoil that has afflicted Brooklyn since Nash was first hired.
Kevin Durant shares his take on Steve Nash being fired
Brooklyn Nets player Kevin Durant expressed his disbelief at Steve Nash’s dismissal as head coach which was revealed on Tuesday. He said that one is always shocked when something like this happens. Although Durant had called for Nash and Marks to be fired during the summer, Nets general manager Sean Marks stated before the game that no players were consulted before the decision.
The Nets suffered their sixth loss in their last eight games only hours after parting ways with coach Nash. In the fourth quarter, Zach LaVine scored 20 of his season-high 29 points helping the Bulls come back to win. Durant finished first among scorers with 32 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Kyrie Irving did not score until the first minute of the fourth when he managed just four points on 2-of-12 shooting.
