The Golden State Warriors came into the 2023 NBA Playoffs with high expectations as the defending champions. But they ran into a hungry and fearless Sacramento Kings team that was making its first postseason appearance since 2006 and had a young and talented core led by De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis.

The Kings stunned the Warriors 126-123 in Game 1 of their first-round series on Saturday night, thanks to a huge comeback in the third quarter and clutch plays down the stretch. Fox and Malik Monk combined for 70 points, with Fox scoring 15 of his game-high 38 points in the final period. Sabonis added 12 points, 11 rebounds, and two assists.

The Warriors, meanwhile, wasted a stellar performance from Stephen Curry, who had 30 points, two assists, and six rebounds. Curry tried to keep his team in the game with his clutch shooting, but he also missed a potential game-tying three-pointer with 2.4 seconds left. Klay Thompson had 21 points, but he shot just 9-of-24 from the field and 4-of-14 from beyond the arc. Draymond Green had with four points, nine rebounds, and 11 assists, but he also committed six turnovers and fouled out with 1:17 remaining.

After the game, Curry tried to rally his teammates and give them confidence for Game 2. He said that they thrive in these situations and that they have a lot of experience and resilience to bounce back.

That’s what we live for,” Curry said. “We thrive in these situations. It’s so different than the regular season because you’re playing the same team, and that little bit of an advantage mentally, seeing the game making those adjustments, it matters. … It brings the best out of us. And there’s a lot of confidence about what that looks like for us to try to, again, just win Game 2 and get back in the series and take it from there.

Curry’s pep talk may have sounded inspiring, but some Warriors fans were not impressed by his words. They took to social media to express their frustration and disappointment with their team’s performance and attitude. They accused Curry of being too passive and complacent, and they demanded more urgency and intensity from him and his teammates.

The Warriors will try to regroup and bounce back in Game 2 on Monday night, but they will need to make some adjustments and play with more urgency and intensity. The Kings, on the other hand, will look to build on their momentum and confidence and take a commanding 2-0 lead.

The series is far from over, but the Kings have proven that they are not intimidated by the champions and that they are ready to make some noise in the playoffs.
