With Aaron Rodgers recently on the Joe Rogan podcast, the issue of sportspersons and vaccination has been in the forefront agian lately. While Covid and the rage seem to decline gradually. During the peak and right after, the sports world so many players opting out of taking the vaccine and the media subsequently relentless reporting on it, and in most cases, rather harshly and unjustly . Looking back, here are five athletes who were deemed villains for their stane on the COVID 19 vaccine.

Jonathan Isaac is a basketball player for the Orlando Magic in the NBA. Isaac has been vocal about things he disagrees as with earlier he had faced scrutiny for standing during the national anthem while other players kneeled in protest of police brutality in the United States.

While explaining his reasoning for not taking the vaccine, He explained that it felt forced and there was a lot of pressure doing it. The media did not leave him be as reports of his decision made headlines and was subject to criticism.

Bryson Dechambeau is an American golfer who has won 8 times at the PGA tour including 1 major championship. The golfer contracted the virus in August 2021 which meant he lost the chance to represent the United States at the Olympics but he later expressed that he had no regrets over it.

Dechambeau exclaimed that the vaccine dosen’t guarantee it from happening and that he was young and fit and would rather let other people who need it, have it. Nevertheless, his excuse did not mean that he was safe from the eyes of the media as he certainly had to pay the price for his decision.

Michael Andrews is a competitive swimmer who is laurelled with gold medals. At the Tokyo Olympics last year, He won the gold medal for swimming while also setting the world record for the 4×100 meter medley race. But before the olympics, Andrew took a chance by declaring that whatever happened he would not be taking the vaccine.

Although his reasons were medical and he was aware and nervous about the consequences of not taking the vaccine, He explained that it was a risk he was willing to take as he did not want to put anything that might bring danger to his body that close to the olympics. The media came at him with full force but he remains unvaccinated but things seem better now as he looks to swim in Australia soon.

2. Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers is a quarterback for the Green Bay Packers and is one of the most decorated players in the league, A former super-bowl champion, 4x league MVP. The quarterback came into straight fire of the media’s ammuniton after he was found not to have taken the vaccine.Rodgers was recently on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast to talk about the controversy.

While Rodgers claimed to have medical reasons for not taking the vaccine citing matters like allergic reactions to polyethylene glycol( aka PEG) a component in the moderna and pfizer vaccines. The media was not kind to Rodgers especially when he misled them by carefully using “immunized” to described his vaccination status. All things came into light when he did end up contracting COVID though from a fully vaccinated person, the media were relentless in taunting him and portraying him as an enemy and someone putting other people in harm’s way.

Fromer NBA champion and all-star Kyrie Irving is one of the best players in the league right now.  While at the height of covid, and mandates being issued around the league and out. Kyrie made the decision to not get vaccinated, sighting personal reasons. This action had severe consequences as even now with the league not having the mandate anymore. Kyrie Irving is still portrayed as the biggest villain in the league and things are not looking to change anytime soon.

Kyrie Irving lost the contract extension with the Nets due to his unavailability and personal choice of staying unvaccinated. And his value in the market plummeted with his image being tarnished all over. While the media has not stopped in their relentless dragging of Irving though admitting in an albeit indirect way, the Nets star successfully preserved some part of his image as he wasn’t entirely cancelled though the attempts were made.
