Tracy McGrady is one of the most gifted players to ever step foot on a basketball court. The 7-time NBA All-Star had all the tools in his arsenal to be one of the greatest players of all time. Unfortunately, his career was cut short due to multiple injuries, including a devastating micro-fracture surgery he underwent during the 2008-09 season. McGrady never went back to being the same player he was.
On August 26th, 2013, McGrady officially announced his retirement and was eventually inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017. Since retirement, he has worked for ESPN as an analyst. He recently made an appearance on ‘The Pat Bev podcast’ with Rone and opened up about his career and the legacy he has left behind. He claimed that his legacy would have been a lot different had he won an NBA Championship.
“If I had won a championship, I think my legacy would be a lot different. I don’t know how much of a difference because I’m internationally known. I sell shoes on a global level, I have a brand on a global level,” said McGrady. “But I think winning a championship probably would have elevated me in a conversation to some of the guys that won that championship in terms of being in that class, talent level I’m in the class regardless, I don’t care what anyone says to that on a talent level.”
The 2-time scoring champion accomplished almost everything there was to accomplish during his tenure in the NBA, but the one thing he could never get his hands on was the Larry O’Brien Trophy. During his early years, McGrady made it to the playoffs but never managed to get out of the first round despite all the dominance he displayed on the court. The one time he did, was with the San Antonio Spurs back in 2013 when the team made it to the NBA Finals but lost in 7 games to the Miami Heat.

Fans aren’t impressed with McGrady praising himself

While McGrady was speaking facts when talking about his legacy and him and his brand being known on a global level, fans were not impressed. Here are some of the best reactions on the former Houston Rockets‘ shooting guard:
McGrady has indeed been voicing his opinion a lot on a variety of topics lately. He most recently criticized James Harden for requesting a trade from the Philadelphia 76ers, stating that Harden has played with more Hall of Famers than anybody in the league and doesn’t have a ring to show for it.
He also spoke about how he was on the same level as the late great Kobe Bryant during his prime. Pat Beverly told McGrady that if he had indeed won a championship, people would have taken their names together as the two best players of their generation. “That was a conversation of who was the best players in the league. It was me and Kobe… barbershop talk and around the league. Real hoopers, real basketball people know,” responded McGrady.
