The NBA has, at last, revealed its highly anticipated In-season tournament, scheduled to occur in the midst of the regular season. With great fanfare, the league held a special event in Las Vegas to make this momentous announcement and also unveiled the groups assigned to each of the 30 NBA teams. This groundbreaking tournament aims to inject a fresh dose of excitement into the regular season.

Several young NBA stars were present for the event, including Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks. During the announcement event in Las Vegas, Paolo Banchero and Cade Cunningham, alongside Trae Young, took the stage to reveal the groups for the Eastern Conference teams. However, as Young began unveiling the teams in Group A, he was met with a chorus of boos and heckling from the crowd.

The atmosphere in Las Vegas took a hostile turn towards Young, as a crowd member shouted, “F*ck Trae Young!” which has become a catchphrase commonly used by fans of Hawks’ opponents during the NBA Playoffs. In response to the hecklers, the player simply replied, “I like that,” with a smirk on his face and proceeded to announce the five teams present in Group A of the Eastern Conference.

Young gained a reputation as a villain within the league due to his standout performance in the infamous playoff series between the Atlanta Hawks and the New York Knicks in 2021. He played a pivotal role in single-handedly eliminating the Knicks from the playoffs, sparking a rivalry between him and passionate New York fans. The heckler in Las Vegas could also potentially be a Celtics fan, as Young faced similar chants during this year’s playoffs when the Hawks faced off against the Celtics.

As revealed by the Hawks superstar, Group A of the East will feature the Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Indiana Pacers, Detroit Pistons, and his team, the Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks’ superstar is looking forward to the tournament, saying, “It’s an exciting time to play more basketball … you’re playing for another award, so it’s just gonna push us and get us ready … will help leading up to the big goal [NBA championship].”

A look at the format for the NBA In-Season Tournament

The eagerly anticipated NBA season tournament is poised to commence in the upcoming NBA season, generating excitement among fans and teams alike as they embrace the league’s innovative initiative.

For starters, here is how the contest will work: All 30 NBA teams will be divided into six groups of 5 teams. Each team will play the four teams in their respective groups once, and each team will face two teams at home and the other two on the road.

Teams with the most impressive records in their respective groups will progress to the subsequent rounds. In an intriguing twist, the tournament games, excluding the Championship, will contribute to the regular season standings. This implies that a triumph in the tournament will be included in a team’s overall count of regular season victories. The tournament nights are scheduled every Tuesday and Friday, taking place from November 3rd to November 28th.

The Tournament will adopt a Knockout system commencing from the quarterfinals and will involve eight teams. During the Knockout stage, each game will be a single elimination match. The participating teams will include the group leaders from the six groups in the Group Play games, along with two “wild cards,” which are the teams that finished second in their groups but have the best record among the second-place finishers from their respective conferences in the Group Play games.

Apart from the prize pool, the league will also award the players with honors such as Most Valuable Player of The In-Season Tournament and the All-Tournament Team selection.
