Turner Sports is the official broadcaster of the NBA league. But the deal will end in the coming years and it seems they don’t plan to renew it later. Earlier, a conference was held to discuss the rising cost of sports media rights.

Warner Bros CEO David Zaslav was a part of that conference where he said, “We don’t have to have the NBA.” The NBA is the most expensive of Warner’s investments related to sports averaging the cost of $1.2 billion per year when compared to the other deals which comprise $200 million for the NHL and $470 million for baseball. Warner Bros split the NCAA deal with CBS, which will be worth $1.05 billion/year at the start of 2026.

David even suggested that the NBA could shift to the ‘HBO Max’ channel if the deal continues. The NBA’s current media rights deals with TNT and Disney’s ESPN are worth $24 billion and will expire after the 2024-25 season. The league reportedly demands a long-term rights package worth as much as $75 billion. Zaslav has already made a name for himself for cost-cutting in a short time since he began to lead Warner Bros. They have reportedly even canceled a fully-finished film to write off the production costs.

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a professional basketball league in North America. The league comprises 30 teams (29 in the United States and 1 in Canada) and is one of the major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada.

The league was founded in New York City on June 6, 1946, as the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The name was changed to the National Basketball Association on August 3, 1949, after merging with the competing National Basketball League (NBL). The Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers have won the most NBA championships at 17 each.

The Golden State Warriors are the defending league champions as they defeated the Boston Celtics 4–2 in the 2022 NBA Finals. With such a daunting history and millions of viewers worldwide, it is very likely that broadcasting rights to rise with time. There is still time for the deal to end and it will be interesting to see if TNT backs out, who will pay millions and secure the media rights.
