“Classless” – Twitter SLAMS Angela Reese for taunting Caitlin Clark during NCAA Tournament final

The women’s NCAA tournament final has definitely gained some recognition. Played between the Louisiana State University Tigers and the Iowa Hawkeyes, the game saw two front-running athletes, Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark, locking horns. In a commanding LSU victory, the scorecard stood at 85-102 at the end of regulation. However, it wasn’t the game that gained a huge amount of traction. It was what happened at the end of it.

The LSU forward was seen gesturing toward the Iowa guard by pointing her finger. She then hit her with a ‘you can’t see me’ gesture, a trademark of WWE superstar John Cena. What followed was a storm of comments on social media in disapproval of Reese’s action. Most comments threw around the word ‘classless’ to mock the forward as a player with no dignity. Reese also spoke about her actions in a post-game interview and was very clearly unapologetic.

All year I was critiqued about who I was. I don’t fit the narrative. I don’t fit in the box that you all want me to be in. I’m too hood, I’m too ghetto. You told me that all year. But when other people do it, y’all don’t say nothing.
Reese said.

Reese also spoke about how girls like her are often treated differently for having a very similar competitive attitude. Saying this gesture was for such girls and that the game was bigger than herself, her stance is unapologetic, to them at least.

While speaking on her post-game interview, Reese predicted that Twitter would absolutely storm with comments. “Twitter would go on a rage,” she said. Unsurprisingly, she was quite right with this as fans on Twitter have poured in numbers calling her out for a seemingly ‘classless’ act.

Many others, however, were quick to point out the same double standard Reese spoke about in her interview. The concept of trash-talking in sports isn’t alien, and while comments of disapproval are common here, the same wasn’t an issue when Caitlin Clark made similar gestures in another game against South Carolina.

While opinions of all kinds are pouring in from all places, as of today, Angel Reese walks as a champion. It will be interesting to see how both these players shape up whenever they get a chance to face each other again.
