Victor Wembanyama, the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA draft by the San Antonio Spurs, had a once-in-a-lifetime chance to sit down with some of the greatest players and coaches in franchise history on Saturday. The 19-year-old French sensation, who stands at 7-foot-5 and has been hailed as a generational talent, joined Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Manu Ginobili, Sean Elliott, and Gregg Popovich for a dinner that was more than just a meal.

According to Elliott, who spoke to Dan Patrick on the ‘Dan Patrick Show’ about the dinner, Wembanyama was eager to learn from the Spurs legends and asked them all kinds of questions about how to succeed in the NBA.

He’s a very mature young man,” Elliott said. “He asked all the questions about how to prepare your body, how to rest, what the travel schedule is like. He asked us all ‘how can you get enough sleep on the road?’ What kind of young person asks that question? Most guys are like, ‘what’s the best club to go to in Philly or New York?’”

Elliott said that Victor Wembanyama showed genuine respect and admiration for the Spurs’ culture and legacy. He said that Wembanyama was especially star-struck by Duncan, who he described as a “Howard Hughes” type who rarely makes public appearances. Popovich and the Spurs organization arranged the dinner, Elliott said, with the main goal of helping Wembanyama grow.

He’s a sponge,” Elliott said. “He wants to soak up everything he can from these guys who have been there and done that.

Elliott further said that Popovich is not looking at Wembanyama’s development in terms of wins and losses, but rather in terms of him getting better and building a foundation for the future. He said that Wembanyama will make an immediate impact on defense with his ability to protect the rim and switch on the perimeter. He also praised his offensive skills and versatility.

Victor Wembanyama will have his first taste of NBA action this summer in the Summer League.
