The first-round series between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Denver Nuggets was more or less a one-sided matchup. Although the Timberwolves tried to put up a fight, the Nuggets were too mighty. Anthony Edwards had a formidable Game 5 with 29 points. However, the Nuggets picked up their fourth win of the series to eliminate the visitors. The score at the end of regulation was 109-112.
Just after missing a game tieing three-pointer, Edwards ran back into the locker room. On his way, he picked up a chair, swirled, and through it across in frustration. Unfortunately, it hit a few employees of the Ball Arena in Denver. However, following the incident, Edwards has now been cited for third-degree assault. Denver police spokesperson Jay Casillas revealed that the thrown chair struck two female employees, who were reported to have been hurt or seriously injured.
A third-degree assault refers to an incident where an individual initiates a fight with the intention to hurt. In order to be convicted of this charge, the alleged victim should have to suffer a serious injury, substantial pain, or impairment of some kind. However, it is not necessary that the injury coming from the assault be life-threatening. If Anthony Edwards is convicted of his charges, he could face up to 18 months in jail and also receive a $1,000 fine.
“We are aware of the alleged incident regarding Anthony Edwards following Game 5 in Denver and are in the process of gathering more information,” the Timberwolves said in a statement. “We have no further comment at this moment.”
How are NBA fans reacting to Anthony Edwards’ citation?

While the Minnesota Timberwolves have no further statements, fans on Twitter have a lot to say. Many are mocking the alleged victims for trying to make money out of a minor incident. Fans have called the citation a ‘pathetic attempt at cash grabbing’, saying this is nowhere near an assault. Many have also defended the NBA player saying that this was an action out of pure frustration due to the elimination. Here are some fan tweets on the situation:
Although many fans have clearly sided with Edwards on this issue, the possibility of his conviction still stands. While many are calling this an attempt to make money, many fans do not consider this an assault whatsoever. In time, the verdict on the case will be out, and hopefully, for Edwards, it is just a minor fine for the accident.
On the flip side, the Denver Nuggets, led by Nikola Jokic, will now advance to the Western Conference Semi-Finals. The Nuggets will play the Phoenix Suns, who have come off a commanding 4-1 series win against the Los Angeles Clippers. With the likes of Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Chris Paul, the Suns will not be an easy opponent to beat. However, the driven Nuggets will settle for nothing less than another series win to get closer to a championship title. Although these are early days to predict the better team, one thing is for sure, the Nuggets-Suns series will be exciting and entertaining to watch.
