“It’s a brutal part of the business” Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr sympathizes with fans as Stephen Curry and Co rested against the Cavaliers

The Golden State Warriors rested four starters on the second night of a back-to-back against the Cavaliers in Cleveland on Friday after facing the Boston Celtics on national television on Thursday night. As the Warriors only play in Cleveland once a year, Cleveland’s NBA fans didn’t have the opportunity to see entertaining talents like Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green in action this season.
Warriors coach Steve Kerr sympathizes with those supporters and believes he has a practical answer for the league: he would cut the regular-season schedule from 82 to 72 games, a reduction of 10. Speaking on the matter he said, “I feel terrible for fans who buy tickets expecting to see someone play and they don’t get to see that person play,’ It’s a brutal part of the business. It’s why I’m going to continue to advocate for 72-game seasons.”
In the NBA, elite players’ rest has been a hot topic in recent years. This season, however, teams’ frequent absence of key players has brought the issue to a fever pitch. The Warriors will continue to choose the path of caution, even if it means upsetting some fans along the way, because, according to Kerr, the evidence shows that resting players—especially on the second night of a back-to-back—is the safe play.
“I know it’s a big topic around the league. We have so much more data, so much more awareness of players’ vulnerability. It’s proven that if guys are banged up, back-to-backs, players are much more likely to get injured and miss more games and so that’s why you’re seeing it league-wide. Everybody is being cautious when a guy is banged up. You’re just playing the long game… We’re going to play it safe all year long as long as guys are banged up and vulnerable to injury.”
Jordan Poole carries the Golden State Warriors against the Cavaliers
Friday marked the end of the Golden State Warriors’ productive five-game road journey. The Bulls beat the Dubs, the Bulls beat the Dubs, the Wizards beat the Dubs, the Dubs blew a game to the Celtics, and the Dubs fought back to win tonight. The Warriors’ Road record has improved from 3-16 to 6-18 since they started the trip. For tonight’s improbable victory over the Cavaliers, Jordan Poole was the driving force.
The Warriors proved to the crowd that they could play solid team basketball even without Stephen Curry, Andrew Wiggins, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. With 32 points, Jordan led the squad tonight after stepping up.
