The Warriors’ season came to a disappointing end on Friday night, as they lost to the Lakers 122-101 in Game 6 of the Western Conference semifinals. But the bigger question looming over the franchise is not about their roster, but their front office.
Bob Myers, the president of basketball operations and general manager who built the Warriors into a dynasty, has not yet signed a new contract with the team. His current deal expires at the end of June.
According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania and Anthony Slater, Myers will take some time to decide his future after a challenging season. Owner Joe Lacob has made it clear that he wants to keep Myers. Lacob has offered him a new deal, but Myers has not accepted it yet. Sources also said that if Myers leaves, the Warriors would promote someone from within the organization rather than looks for an external candidate.
Myers’ departure would be a huge blow for the Warriors, who have relied on his vision, leadership and relationships to build a culture of excellence and a competitive roster. Myers is responsible for drafting Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, signing Kevin Durant, and acquiring Andre Iguodala and Andrew Wiggins. He is also close with many of the players and coaches, who trust him to make the best decisions for the team.
How Myers’ decision could impact the Warriors’ roster?
Myers’ decision and future with the Warriors will have a ripple effect on the rest of the organization and on the roster. Myers is just as important as anyone to the Warriors’ dynasty, so his departure could be seen as the beginning of the end for the team’s championship aspirations.
Green has a player option for next season, but he could opt out and test free agency, where he would likely have multiple suitors. The Athletic reported that the Warriors intend to discuss a new multi-year contract with Green, either via an opt-in and extension or an entirely new deal after an opt-out.
If Myers departs, it could create uncertainty and instability for Green and other players who have trusted him to make the best decisions for the team. It could also affect their willingness to take pay cuts or make sacrifices for the sake of winning.
The Warriors are already facing a huge luxury tax bill next season, which could limit their flexibility to improve their roster or retain their core players. They also have some aging stars who are prone to injuries, such as Curry (35), Thompson (33) and Iguodala (39). Without Myers at the helm, the Warriors could struggle to maintain their culture of excellence and their competitive edge in a tough Western Conference.
