The defending NBA champions Golden State Warriors entered the playoffs after earning the coveted 6th seed ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers. The Warriors’ reward was a favorable first-round series against the Sacramento Kings, who are making their first playoff appearance after 17 years. However, things have gone south quickly for the reigning champions as they face a 0-2 deficit into Game 3 at home.

Led by De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis, the Kings already shocked the world by finishing third in the Western Conference. But even their most optimistic supporters wouldn’t have envisioned the position the team finds itself in. They became the first team to hand the Warriors successive defeats in the playoffs since the Toronto Raptors managed it in the 2019 NBA Finals en route to winning the title.

The Warriors haven’t faced an 0-2 deficit in a playoff series since they drafted Curry in 2009. In the last eight years, they have never won the West and reached the Finals each time they earned a playoff spot. Since 2015, Golden State has played in six NBA Finals and won four titles.

But things aren’t looking too bright right now for the Warriors.

History doesn’t favor Stephen Curry and the Warriors. The Dubs have lost all nine playoff series after going down 0-2. The last time the Warriors were down 0-2 in a best-of-seven series was during the 2006-07 season against the Utah Jazz in the Western Conference semifinals. They eventually lost the series 4-2.

The Warriors will believe that with Curry, Klay Thompson, and co., they can end the franchise’s 0-9 streak against the Kings. The duo orchestrated a comeback from 1-3 down against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Conference Finals in 2016. With Wiggins just returning to the lineup after a lengthy layoff and Gary Payton II also rejoining the fold, the Warriors will back themselves to mount a comeback and rewrite history.

The Warriors will need their young stars Jordan Poole and Donte DiVincenzo to step up and play much better than they did in Games 1 and 2. With Games 3 and 4 scheduled to take place at home, the Warriors will look to even the series at 2-2 before heading to Sacramento for Game 5. However, if they lose either of their next two games, the Kings will set up to cause one of the biggest upsets in recent memory.
