This off-season has been nothing short of dramatic for the NBA. There have been blockbuster trades and holdouts. Bradley Beal signed with the Phoenix Suns, and Damian Lillard finally requested a trade out of Portland. It has definitely been interesting to watch. Another franchise that has made some major off-season moves is the Golden State Warriors. They re-signed a core member of their championship squad in Draymond Green. The Warriors also signed Suns point guard Chris Paul.

It seems the Warriors have again decided to put their chips on their old championship core. They traded away young talent in the form of Jordan Poole, a man who had been instrumental in helping them win the 2022 championship and decided to re-sign 33-year-old Green. This put all rumors regarding who the front office would favor to rest. This decision might also help shed some light on the Klay Thompson situation, as he would be entering the last year of his contract in the 2023-2024 season.

Fans around the league have been questioning whether or not the Warriors would re-sign Klay Thompson, as he is no longer the player he once used to be. Helping to clear out the fog on this, Warriors owner Joe Lacob recently commented on the situation. While talking with The Athletic, he said, “Look, we’ve had some very brief discussions at this point with his agent, but they’re very, very early. I think we’re all still adjusting to figuring out what our financial situation is, our cap space situation.”

He added, “I fully expect we will have some substantial discussions soon. And we’ll see if we can put something together that allows Klay to be here for a long time, which we clearly would like him to be.”

Looking at the statements provided by Lacob and the fact that the Warriors have kept Green around, it looks very possible that Thompson might stick around. The fact that Thompson would be a free agent as he carried out all the years of his contract also needs to be considered. He is free to look around the league for better-paying options when it comes to it, and so it is still very early to say what his future with the franchise would look like. Fans and media alike will have to wait until the next off-season to see where Klay Thompson ends up.

The Warriors have decided to shake up their roster considerably this offseason, making some major moves. Even though the Warriors won a championship in 2022, they switched things up after a disappointing second-round loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. Most of these decisions were headlined by newly appointed General Manager Mike Dunleavy.

The Warriors ultimately decided to put their faith in their old championship core by trading away Poole to the Washington Wizards, even though the franchise had just signed him to a 4-year, $128 million contract. Many had questioned who the franchise would side with after the pre-season scuffle between Poole and Green, and it looks like the front office has answered. The franchise re-signed a core member of their team, Draymond Green, to a $100 million contract.

In exchange for Poole, the Suns landed Bradley Beal, and the Warriors received Chris Paul. Besides this, In the 2023 draft, the Warriors picked up an elite shooter in the form of 6’5 guard Brandin Podziemski from Santa Clara. Podziemski averaged 19.9 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 3.7 assists, along with an impressive 1.8 steals, for the single-season he played for the Broncos.

The Warriors then traded into the second round, sending cash to the Wizards, and selected center Trayce Jackson-Davis with the 57th pick, a player who loves screen and roll plays along with high-energy lobs. Jackson-Davis has played all four college basketball seasons and averaged 20.9 points in his final year. The Warriors have made some strategic signings, to say the least, although many question the logic of signing an aging Paul in exchange for a young Poole. Fans will just have to wait for the upcoming season to see whether their moves actually bear fruit.
