Boston Celtics’ slump in form continued as they lost to the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night. Boston took an early lead of six points but Indiana closed off the opening frame with a 37-11 run. The Pacers led by 28 points at the half, and despite the Celtics ability to close the gap to five points in the fourth quarter, they were unable to complete the comeback. They lost 117-112, which was their fifth defeat in their previous six games.

The Pacers went on a shooting clinic after starting the game 0 for 9 from the field. They made their next 11 attempts, making 46.9 percent of their shots overall and 46.2 percent of their three-point attempts to end the game. The offensive struggles of the Celtics persisted as they managed just 38.6 percent on the field and 31.7 percent from beyond the arc. For this performance of theirs they were booed by their own fans, here is a video of the bizarre incident.

The one bright spot for Boston was Jayson Tatum, who almost led his team to a comeback with a 41-point performance. With 19 points, Jaylen Brown was the next-highest scorer for the Celtics, while Malcolm Brogdon added 18 points while playing off the bench against his former team. Tyrese Halliburton led the Pacers in scoring with 33 points and 8 rebounds. Aaron Nesmith, an old acquaintance, made his TD Garden comeback and scored 15 points.

The Celtics would have added to their games won this season if they had been even marginally competitive in the first half. Unfortunately, it was impossible to recover from the terrible start that allowed Indiana to score 42 points in the opening quarter.

The first-half deficit for Boston was 30 points, which was the most since December of last year. The Pacers made 11 straight shots during their early run, and the defense, which hasn’t looked anything like last year’s best unit all season, was powerless to stop them.

By reducing the deficit to five points with three minutes left in the fourth quarter of the second half, the Celtics were dangerously close to staging a historic comeback. However, the Pacers always responded with a clutch shot anytime the Celtics were close to scoring.

Tatum made a comeback after being absent for personal reasons during Sunday’s loss to the Magic. The three-time All-Star made every effort to turn around his team’s fortunes. Tatum exploded for 41 points on 13-of-25 shooting after a shaky start. With 15 points in the third quarter, he helped the Celtics almost make a comeback but the team failed to do so.
