Watch: Grizzlies go ballistic after Ja Morant gets ejected against OKC Thunder for talking with a fan

Ja Morant

Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant was ejected in the 2nd quarter of the game between the Grizzlies and Oklahoma City Thunder. It was one of the most surprising ejections of this season. As not only Ja was taken by surprise by the ejection but even commentators were not sure why it was technical in the first place.

With 43.2 seconds remaining in the second quarter, OKC’s Eugene Omoruyi was shooting his free throws against the Grizzlies. When the Grizzlies star was hit with a second technical. Ja already had 1 technical foul earlier in the game and the second technical meant his automatic ejection from play.

After the game, the crew chief for the contest gave clarity about Morant’s ejection from the game. It was reported that the Grizzlies superstar was hit with a second technical in the game for comments that “questioned the integrity of the officials.” Interestingly, Ja has been hit a technical before for asking the officials if he bet on “FanDuel” during the Celtics-Grizzlies game.

After the game, Morant gave his side of the story, giving more clarification on the incident. “I got my first tech for saying I got hit in my (expletive) face. Didn’t curse at him,” Morant said. “Another situation where he’s in my conversation and I get another tech for talking with a fan. I feel like when these fans came here, went online to buy these tickets, they didn’t say Ray’s (Acosta) name to come watch.

Although the Grizzlies were down 21 points when Ja Morant was ejected, the last hope for the Grizzlies died with their star’s ejection. Second-in-line star, Dillion Brooks scored 32 points for the Grizzlies’ losing cause. Only 4 of the Grizzlies players scored in 2-digits and none even touched the 20-point mark. Morant scored just 6 points and was having a bad night from the field as he shot 3 of 10 from the field until he was ejected.

The Thunder came to the game without their star players Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Josh Giddey. And, ended their 5-game losing streak against one of the top teams in the league. Lu Dort scored 24 points with Isiah Joe who scored a season-high 23 points, hitting five 3-pointers. When the Grizzlies coach was asked about the reason for Morant’s ejection. Jenkins said, “I’ll keep that private, Thunder played great, we just didn’t make enough shots tonight. They played well.”
