The New York Knicks playoff run came to a screeching halt on Friday night as they fell to the Miami Heat 96-92 in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Knicks, who exceeded expectations this season by earning the fifth seed in the East, could not keep up with the Heat’s star duo of Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo, who combined for 47 points and 17 rebounds.

The Knicks’ All-Star and All-NBA forward Julius Randle was one of the main culprits for their disappointing exit, as he had another subpar performance in Game 6. Randle, who averaged a career-high 25.1 points and 10 rebounds per game in the regular season, finished with just 15 points on 3-for-14 shooting (1 of 7 from 3-point range) and 11 rebounds.

Randle’s poor showing did not sit well with some Knicks fans, who vented their frustration on a poster of Randle that was hanging on a wall outside Madison Square Garden. The fans tore down the poster, stomped on it, and spray-painted “trade me” on Randle’s face, while others cheered and filmed the incident on social media. The videos quickly went viral and sparked backlash from many Knicks fans and others in the basketball world, who called the act disrespectful and ungrateful.

Some fans defended Randle, who helped lead the Knicks to a 47-35 record. They also pointed out that Randle was not the only one to blame for the playoff loss, as other players like RJ Barrett, Mitchell Robinson, and Quentin Grimes also struggled against the Heat’s defense.

This was not the first time that Randle had a tense interaction with Knicks fans. In January 2022, Randle responded to boos from the MSG crowd by giving them a thumbs-down gesture. Randle later said that the gesture was meant to tell them to “shut the f–k up”.

After signing a four-year, $117 million contract with the Knicks in 2022, Julius Randle faced high expectations and harsh criticism in his first season in New York. But under the guidance of new coach Tom Thibodeau, Randle transformed himself into an All-Star and an All-NBA player in his second season. He improved his defense, his leadership, and his efficiency, while also forming a dynamic duo with Jalen Brunson.

However, Randle’s playoff performance left a lot to be desired. He failed to deliver in the clutch and was outplayed by his opponents. He will be a free agent in 2026 and his future with the Knicks is uncertain. Randle has a lot to prove and a lot to decide in the next few years.
