On Tuesday night, before the Clippers faced the Suns in Game 2 of their first-round playoff series, Russell Westbrook had a funny encounter with a Suns reporter who was doing a live segment near the court. The reporter, whose name is not known, was talking to the camera about how he expected the Suns to come out and set the tempo for the game. He implied that the Suns had an advantage over the Clippers, who had won Game 1 on Sunday.
Westbrook, who was warming up nearby, overheard the reporter’s comment and decided to chime in. He said to the reporter from a distance, “Good luck,” with a sarcastic tone and a smile on his face.
The video of the exchange quickly went viral on social media, with many fans and analysts finding Westbrook’s response hilarious. Some also noted that Westbrook had a history of clashing with reporters, especially during his time with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Westbrook’s remark also turned out to be wrong, as the Suns went on to beat the Clippers 123-109 in Game 2, evening out the series at 1-1. Westbrook had a solid game, scoring 28 points, grabbing five rebounds, and dishing out five assists.
Russell Westbrook’s role in Clippers’ playoff run
The Utah Jazz acquired Russell Westbrook in a trade with the Los Angeles Lakers but quickly bought his contract out to allow him to sign with a team of his choosing. The former league MVP decided that he wanted to stay in LA and signed with the Clippers. The move reunited him with his former Thunder teammate Paul George, who had requested a trade to Los Angeles in 2019.
The Clippers had high hopes for Westbrook, hoping that he would provide them with another dynamic playmaker and leader alongside George and Kawhi Leonard. However, Westbrook’s first season with the Clippers was plagued by injuries and inconsistency. Despite Westbrook’s struggles, the Clippers managed to finish fifth in the Western Conference with a 44-38 record.
In the postseason, Westbrook has shown flashes of his former MVP form, especially in clutch situations. In Game 1 against the Suns, he had two crucial offensive rebounds and two key defensive stops in the final minutes of the Clippers’ 115-110 win.
In Game 2, he was instrumental in keeping the Clippers close in the first half, scoring 18 points before halftime. However, he could not prevent the Suns from pulling away in the second half behind Devin Booker’s 38 points and Kevin Durant’s 25 points and five assists.
The series will shift to Los Angeles for Game 3 on Thursday night at Staples Center. The Clippers will look to bounce back from their Game 2 loss and cut their series deficit to 2-1. Westbrook will also look to silence any doubters or critics who may question his ability or impact on his team. As he showed on Tuesday night, he is not afraid to speak his mind or back up his words with his actions.
