After dominating in the NBA pre-season with his impressive performance on both sides of the court, Victor Wembanyama officially made his NBA debut against the Dallas Mavericks, and it feels like he hasn’t missed a step from his pre-season performance.

Wembanyama made his impact felt from the moment he stepped foot on the court. In just the first minute of the game, Wembanyama blocked Kyrie Irving’s mid-range shot effortlessly and sent a message to the Mavericks that it won’t be easy to score while he is on the floor. He also showed off his skills on the offensive side of the floor, scoring 15 points in 23 minutes on the court.

While the San Antonio Spurs lost the game 126-119 to the Mavericks behind Luka Doncic‘s 33-point triple-double, the future seems bright for Wembanyama. He showed incredible basketball IQ during the game and made the opponents scared to attempt to go to the rim at any point in the game.

Kyrie Irving praises the Spurs for recognizing Victor Wembanyama’s potential

Victor Wembanyama has shown his prowess on both sides of the court, which has impressed a lot of NBA veterans. Former No.1 overall pick and NBA Champion Kyrie Irving shared his opinion about Wembanyama and praised the Spurs and Gregg Popovich for finding a “diamond in the rough”.

He said:

I know Pop has a diamond in the rough over there. I think the whole Spurs organization knows it.

Kyrie also said that he has seen Wembanyama’s play and he was deservedly the number one overall pick of the 2023 NBA draft and expects great things from him.

He added:

Deservedly so be the number one pick... It's been incredible to see some of his highlights.

From his first NBA game, in which he scored 15 points, dished out 2 assists, grabbed 5 rebounds, made 1 block, and recorded 2 steals, it’s evident that Wembanyama possesses the talent to potentially forge a legendary career for himself.
