Draymond Green and Andrew Nicholson

When we look back at the 2012 NBA draft, it’s astonishing to see that Draymond Green was selected 35th overall. The 2017 Defensive Player of the Year was not expected to achieve the defensive and playmaking prowess he is known for today. Draymond has been an integral part of the four championships the Warriors have won in the modern NBA. Due to his accomplishments, Draymond is considered to be the steal of the 2012 draft.

In a recent episode of Podcast P with Paul George, Draymond discussed his journey to the NBA and other topics. When asked about the most ridiculous player drafted before him, Draymond pointed towards Andrew Nicholson, the No. 19 overall pick of the 2012 draft. Green also jokingly made fun of Andrew’s physique, saying that he didn’t look like a basketball player.

“Not to throw salt at anybody, but, like, Andrew Nicholson was drafted over me at 19. When it comes to winning, half the battle is looking like a basketball player. If you look at the other side of the floor and see guys who don’t look like basketball players, you automatically lose respect. And when you lose respect for those guys, you do things to them in the game that you otherwise wouldn’t have done if you respected that guy,” Green said on the podcast.

Draymond recently signed a four-year, $100 million deal to stay with the team that drafted him back in 2012, the Golden State Warriors, whereas Andrew Nicholson last played in the NBA with the Brooklyn Nets in the 2016-17 season.

Andrew Nicholson, who was drafted 16 spots ahead of Draymond Green at No. 19 by the Orlando Magic in the 2012 NBA Draft, was drafted out of St. Bonaventure University and played four seasons for the Magic, where he averaged 6.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 0.4 blocks. Even after such a mediocre performance, he was picked up by the Washington Wizards for four years and $25 million and was then quickly traded to the Nets in the same season. He was traded again after only 10 games to the Portland Trail Blazers, who waived him immediately.

After getting waived by the Portland Trail Blazers, Nicholson took his talents to the Chinese Basketball Association and signed with the Guangdong Southern Tigers in 2017. In 2018, he signed with the Fujian Sturgeons, and in the 2019-2020 season, he signed with the Guangzhou Loong Lions, where he had the best season of his career, scoring a commendable 26 points and 10 rebounds. He then returned to the Fujian Sturgeons in 2020 and returned to the US after COVID hit. Currently, he has been signed with the Bay Area Dragons in the East Asia Super League since 2022 and has been playing with them since.
