Dillon Brooks has been a key piece of the Memphis Grizzlies’ core for six seasons, but his future with the team is now in question after a report by NBA insider Shams Charania who works for The Athletic.
On Tuesday, Charnia tweeted that the Grizzlies have decided to part ways with Brooks, who has spent his entire six-year career in Memphis. “The Memphis Grizzlies have informed pending free agent Dillon Brooks that he will not be brought back under any circumstances, league sources say.” He followed up his tweet with a detailed article on The Athletic, where he explained the reasons behind the Grizzlies’ decision.
Charania wrote that Brooks’ first-round series against the Los Angeles Lakers was considered to be a breaking point, as he made several disrespectful comments about LeBron James, punched him in the groin area in Game 3, missed a defensive assignment on him in Game 4, and shot poorly throughout the series. He also wrote that Brooks chose not to speak to the media after three of the losses in the series, resulting in a $25,000 fine by the NBA.
Brooks’ agent, Mike George, founder of OneLegacy Sports Management, was not happy with Charania’s report and took to Twitter to express his frustration and anger. He accused Charania of being the leader of spreading false news and attacking players and questioned why any player in the league talks to him.
“@ShamsCharania the leader of spreading false news and attacking players. Why any player in the league talks to this guy blows my mind. #weirdo,” tweeted George.
What does this mean for Dillon Brooks’ future with the Grizzlies?
Brooks is a second-round pick out of Oregon in 2017 and has established himself as a three-and-D wing who can serve as a starter for some teams. He averaged 14.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game this season while shooting 39.6% from the field and 32.6% from three-point range. He is known for his fiery personality and his gritty defense on some of the best players in the league.
It remains unclear whether Charania’s report is accurate or not, and whether Brooks will stay or leave Memphis this summer. The Grizzlies have up to five first-round picks and up to three draft swaps to utilize in perspective trades. The executive vice president of basketball operations Zach Kleiman told reporters on Sunday that the franchise will be “very aggressive” in the offseason.
Brooks has not commented publicly on Charania’s report or his agent’s reaction yet.
