Donovan Mitchell is one of the best players in the league, from being a late lottery pick to cementing himself as a franchise player in Utah, leading the struggling franchise to the first seed in the Western Conference in 2020-21 with a record 52-20 record. Utah ultimately took a different route as they couldn’t achieve playoff success with Mitchell and Rudy Gobert as their franchise players.
Ever since Mitchell was traded from the Utah Jazz to the Cleveland Cavaliers last offseason, it was expected that they would be elevated to title contention but the results were the opposite. They had a great regular season but were bombed out of the playoffs in the first round by the New York Knicks. They didn’t perform to the expectations and when the lights were the brightest, as their backcourt of Mitchell and Darius Garland struggled. While their frontcourt of Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen was nearly outrebounded by Mitchell Robinson.
Mitchell was never expected to sign an extension in Cleveland after he got traded as he always wanted to play for the Knicks. Now, NBA Insider Brian Windhorst has confirmed that Mitchell will not be signing an extension in Cleveland, next off season. Mitchell ultimately wants to play winning basketball and if Cleveland can provide such a situation for Mitchell, things might change for good.

Did the Cleveland Cavaliers improve their roster from last season?
The Cavs were a great team last season, where they struggled the most in the postseason was their efficiency beyond the arch. They shot only 44.9% from the field and a miserable 32.7% from beyond the three-point line. Due to this, offense stagnated and their performance stagnated in the playoffs. They have made some moves this offseason that can make them better and make Donovan Mitchell stay with the Cavs.
They added players like Max Strus and Georges Niang to combat their three-point shooting struggles. Both of them shot around 40% from beyond the arch last season. They also added guard Ty Jerome to increase their depth in the guard posting after their backup guard Ricky Rubio took a break from playing basketball due to mental health reasons. It would be interesting to see if their signings work out and help them to retain Mitchell next season.
