NYC Mayor Eric Adams says vaccine mandate holding out Kyrie Irving is ‘Unfair’

Kyrie Irving has faced a lot of backlashes due to his vaccination stance, especially in the early days of the 2021-22 season. But now being available for the team on part-time basis, it seems like the Brooklyn Nets are struggling to cope in his absence. As a result of which New York City Mayor Eric Adams has revealed his opinion upon the same.

Adams suggested that the mandate that allows unvaccinated out-of-towns player to participate in the game out of the city. But bans the same personnel to not participate in game in the city in ‘unfair’ to New York teams. Kyrie Irving being the most affected player evidently, because of the same has caused Brooklyn Nets to struggle majorly in the Eastern Conference lately.

What was opinionated by Eric Adams on the mandate affecting Nets and Kyrie Irving?

“I think it’s unfair. I’m not sure if a Boston fan created this rule—I don’t know—but I am really, really leery about sending the wrong message,” Adams said Wednesday as quoted by Bleacher Report. “Having the city close down again keeps me up at night. The message was put in place, the rule was put in place, to start changing it now would send mixed messages. I’m struggling with this, just to be honest.”

Adams’ comments come after NBA commissioner Adam Silver questioned the logic of the New York City mandate, which was put in place under former Mayor Bill de Blasio.

“This law in New York, the oddity of it to me is that it only applies to home players,” Silver said Wednesday on ESPN’s Get Up. “I think if ultimately that rule is about protecting people who are in the arena, it just doesn’t quite make sense to me that an away player who is unvaccinated can play in Barclays but the home player can’t. To me, that’s a reason they should take a look at that ordinance.”

That being said, as suggested earlier by parting James Harden, that Kyrie Irving’s stance on vaccination did play a little role in him asking for a trade. Will the Nets be made to pay more backlash because of the same mandate?
