To say Russell Westbrook was a good fit for the Los Angeles Lakers is a major misconception. Throughout the season, the team struggled to improvise around the player while he was the only “experienced” player on the roster. Westbrook struggled from the field shooting only 44.4% and 29.8% from three this season. Despite having similar numbers on his prior teams, these numbers are more looked over since the Lakers were expected to compete for the title.

The Lakers finished the season as the 11th seed in the Western Conference with 33 wins and 49 losses. As a result of the underwhelming season, they decided to dismiss head coach Frank Vogel who was not told about it directly but by the media. Now, as the Lakers miss the play-in tournament, Russell Westbrook’s future with the Lakers is also a question.

Recently, Russell Westbrook opened up about his season with the Lakers and how they handle his presence on the roster. Brodie said, “When I first got here, I just felt that I never was given a fair chance to be who I needed to be to better help this team.” He was asked if he at some point in this season felt himself to which the player replied saying, “Very rarely. There were times and spurts, but I was just trying to find my way honestly.”

During the off-season, the Lakers seemingly pushed to sign Westbrook to help them win a championship in the upcoming season. Despite the ugly season, LeBron James and Anthony Davis both showed their support for Westbrook saying, “Let Russ be Russ.” The player himself let out a very controversial statement based on these words saying, “Well that wasn’t true, let’s be honest.”

According to reports, James and Davis were both head-on for signing Russell Westbrook to the team while general manager Rob Pelinka pushed for acquiring Buddy Hield. Following Russ’s statement, it seems like the Lakers franchise and roster were very hypocritical with their answers to the media on the player. This may have a major effect on relationships internally.

Westbrook averaged 18.5 points with 7.4 rebounds and 7.1 assists per game this season. This is the lowest numbers he has ever averaged since his second year in the league during the 2009-10 season and it is the first time he has averaged 20 points per game as well. Russ has a $47.1 million (US) contract extension that he could exercise with the Lakers but it does not seem likely to happen, now. Recently, the Charlotte Hornets have also shown interest in the former league MVP which leaves us with more questions than answers.
