Stephen Curry is currently the 5th best defender in NBA and the best defender in the Golden State Warriors lineup as per the Defensive Ratings. Saturday night against the Brooklyn Nets, however, his defense earned him a foul. But, looking at the big picture, it will be a small meaningless part of the night as the Warriors beat the Nets 110-106 at home in a close encounter.

Stephen Curry scored 19 points with 3-10 shooting from the three-point territory. Andrew Wiggins was very effective for the Warriors, scoring 24 points on an efficient 10-18 shooting from the field. He did a bit of everything as he also had 3 steals and two blocks in the game. Otto Porter Jr had 16 points with four blocks in the game. Klay Thompson who played for 26 minutes in the game scored 16 points and hit the most clutch shot since his comeback.

For the Nets, Kyrie Irving scored 32 points in the absence of James Harden and Kevin Durant. Patty Mills added 24 points, nailing down three 3-pointers in the clutch moments. Off nights from LaMarcus Aldridge and Bruce Brown also cost the Nets as they had 9 and 2 points respectively. James Johnson contributed with 14 points. No other Net could score in double digits.

The game delivered to its hype as it went down right to the final seconds. Both the teams traded clutch three-pointers towards the end. With 12 seconds remaining, Klay Thompson hit a 3-pointer to take the Warriors ahead 107-106. Kyrie Irving then on the other end hit a 3-pointer of his own to make the score 107-106, back to a one-point game. The Nets then fouled Warriors both the times but couldn’t score and that was the night for the Nets.

Stephen Curry fouled playing great defense

During the game in the 3rd quarter, Stephen Curry was guarding Kyrie Irving. Kyrie was having it tough, so he started to put some moves on Curry and called for a screen. Kyrie then faked going through the screen to go the other way instead. But Curry knew already, thanks to their many previous battles. Curry went already in the direction Irving would go which caused Kyrie to bump into Stephen Curry.

Despite playing great defense and perfectly anticipating Kyrie’s moves, Curry had to pay the penalty. He was evidently unhappy with this foul as it was already the 3rd for him in the night. However, Curry did not let Kyrie score unlike the 2016 NBA Finals when the latter hit one of the most clutch shots in the NBA history. Twitter has always been divided over the Kyrie-Curry supremacy debate and this time it was no different. Fans on Twitter had mixed reactions as to what should have been the call by the referee.
