It has been a horrid 2025-26 campaign for Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans. The Pelicans are coming off another loss as they suffered a 104-95 defeat to the defending champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, at the Paycom Center on Tuesday night.
The loss dropped the Pelicans to 12-37, leaving them at the bottom of the Western Conference standings. Meanwhile, the San Antonio Spurs continue to show why they are championship contenders, improving their record to 32-15 and remaining second in the standings.
Following the departures of Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum in the offseason, the Pelicans had decided it was time to hit the reset button. After drafting Zion Williamson as the number one pick in the 2019 NBA draft, many believed that Williamson would be the face of the franchise and lead the club for years to come.
However, nothing has gone according to plan for both the club and the player. Williamson has often been in the headlines for the wrong reasons. Often criticized for his injuries, lack of commitment, and weight issues, Williamson may go down as one of the biggest “what ifs” in NBA history. Injuries have not spared the young forward this season, as Williamson has been restricted to just 33 appearances so far.
Former NBA player and champion Matt Barnes floated a theory on why Williamson has been injury-prone in his career during the recent episode of “All the Smoke Unplugged”.
He might be d*ckin’ down too much. He might have to keep his meat in his pants, pause. We keep hearin’ all wild stuff. They say that boy is wild on the gram. He’ll sling whatever. As he should for a young fella, but we gotta see bro on the court because when you watch and see him in his element, he’s a problem.

When healthy, Williamson has been an absolute beast, hard to stop because of his size, skill, and athleticism. But unfortunately, injuries have taken a significant toll on his young career.
Fans were left in disgust by Matt Barnes’ comments on Zion Williamson
While lack of fitness and dedication have played a role in Williamson’s struggles, Barnes’ comments on the 25-year-old were not appreciated by the fans on social media.

Clearly, Barnes is making a wild guess there. Williamson has been involved in some controversial relationships in the past. But Williamson has posted decent numbers this season as he is currently averaging 22 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 3.4 assists on 58.3% from the field.
New Orleans Pelicans shut down Zion Williamson’s trade rumors
With the trade deadline less than a month away and some big moves already taking place, there were a lot of reports that the Pelicans may decide to put Williamson in the market as well. His value has fallen considerably over the years, and it is clear now that the club cannot count on him to carry the franchise or be its face anymore.

However, NBA Insider Chris Haynes has reported that the club will be sticking with Williamson as they have shut down the trade rumors surrounding the forward and four other players.
New Orleans Pelicans are disappointing the market in informing teams that Zion Williamson, Trey Murphy, Herb Jones, Derik Queen and Jeremiah Fears will remain with the organization past Feb. 5 trade deadline.

With the trade deadline fast approaching, there would have been clubs interested in the services of Williamson. It’s an incredibly bizarre approach by the Pelicans unless the front office is trying to pressure interested teams to up the ante.
