Former NBA champion Richard Jefferson has condemned NBA criteria for choosing MVP, as he believes that the league’s legacy is messed up by giving the award to single-players multiple times only based on their individual stats and ignoring their contribution to the team.
This NBA season has been one of the most interesting seasons in the history of the league and the thing which has made it more exciting is the performance of three big men who are also leading the MVP race ladder. According to the current standing of KIA MVP, Nuggets star center Nikola Jokic is leading in the race where he is followed by second spot holder Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo and at the third-position Sixers, star center Joel Embiid has been placed.
It was almost after 23-years since a center forward player received the MVP award in the 2021 season (Nikola Jokic) and he has continued his MVP level performance in the current season. In 2021-22, Joker has averaged 27.1 PPG, 13.8 RPG, and 7.9 APG where he left everyone with no doubt that why he is leading the MVP race this season. But if we compare the performance of his team with the other two MVP contender Giannis and Embiid their team has done a better job than the Nuggets.
Meanwhile, the Bucks are in the second seed and the Sixers are in the 4th seed of the east whereas the Nuggets are in the sixth seed of the west which shows that the MVP contender might be playing their best game but how really it worked for their team. This type of condition was previously used in the selection of the MVP but the rules were changed. Moreover, it seems that former Cavs star Richard Jefferson wants the league to follow the old school method again to pick the most valuable player.

Richard Jefferson gives his honest opinion on the procedure of selecting NBA MVP of the season
Recently, Jefferson was on the “Road Tippin” podcast where he talked about the possibility of Joker winning the MVP but he also raised questions on the criteria of selection for the NBA award
“I think Jokic has done a masterful job,” Jefferson said. “They have dominated the teams that they were supposed to beat. Now, when they went against teams they weren’t supposed to beat, it didn’t look nearly as pretty. And that’s still good, a .500 record versus teams that are .500 above.”
