Donovan Mitchell is one of the NBA’s brightest stars. But what many fans don’t know is the amazing story of his parents, Nicole and Donovan Mitchell Sr., who have been huge influences in his life and have helped him become the player he is today.
Donovan Sr. is the New York Mets director of player relations and a former Minor League Baseball player. Spida spent much of his childhood in and around Major League Baseball locker rooms in New York. Donovan Sr. often shares photos of his son on Instagram under the handle @dmitch2010.
Nicole is of Panamanian descent and works as a teacher. The two have an incredibly close relationship, according to a piece for the Players’ Tribune, Donovan Mitchell has said that his mother,“is the best person I know.” Donovan’s mother was initially skeptical of her son’s NBA career. She encouraged Donovan to focus on his studies and be hopeful of a scholarship to play college basketball.

Nicole and Donovan have joined forces to help give back to the community. On World Teachers Day, Nicole and Donovan Mitchell delivered new sneakers and gift packs to two pre-schools in Salt Lake City. Nicole said, “Teachers, as we all know, are so underrated, underpaid.” The pre-schools received the All-Star guard’s new at the time Crayola-inspired DON Issue #2 sneakers as well as a gift pack from Crayola.
Nicole reflected on the difficulties teachers had faced during the pandemic: “Having taught through the pandemic for three months, it was challenging but we made it happen. Now these teachers are teaching the full year with this cloud over their head.” With this kind gesture, Nicole and Donovan Mitchell continue to demonstrate their commitment to supporting the local community.
Nicole and Donovan Sr.’s attitudes towards the community are reflected in Don Jr.’s decision to start SPIDACARES. It is a non-profit organization aimed at the empowerment of women. They say that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. When it comes to being charitable, Donovan certainly takes after his parents.
