Number 1: Brittney Griner
The WNBA and Phoenix Merucury star Brittney Griner was arrested in February at a Moscow airport after Russian authorities said a search of her luggage revealed vape cartridges filled with cannabis oil. She was immediately detained under the charges as it is illegal to possess cannabis oil in Russia. After much deliberation, the Russian court sentenced her to nine years in prison for the drug offense in August. She was later transferred to a prison colony in Mordovia to begin serving her sentence. However, the USA was able to get the star player back in a prison swap deal and she has returned to the homeland.
Number 2: Allen Iverson
Another well-known player in the NBA, Allen Iverson, also spent time in jail. In 1996, Allen was allegedly involved in a high-school fight and many students were sentenced to prison. Allen was one of them and stayed behind bars for almost four months. He was later released due to a lack of evidence. This happened long before he entered the league.
Number 3: J.R. Smith
Two-time NBA champion J.R. Smith was involved in a car accident in 2007 in which he and his fellow mate were severely injured. Smith was associated with the Denver Nuggets back then. After almost two years after this incident, he was found guilty and charged with 90 days in prison as he ran into a stop-sign that led to the mishap, but he only spent a month in jail due to the community service he was up to.
Number 4: Jason Caffey
Former Chicago Bulls player Jason Caffey was arrested in May 2010 and charged with third-degree domestic violence in Alabama for hitting and kicking a woman. Caffey has ten children with eight mothers and has been sued in multiple child support lawsuits. The two-time NBA champion also had a panic attack during practice in 2001 and had to miss a flight because of that. Nonetheless, in 2003, Caffey and two more teammates were involved in an assault case after a brawl outside a bar.
Number 5: Jayson Williams
Former New Jersey Nets All-Star Jayson Williams played for the Philadelphia before he joined the New Jersey team. In 1992, Williams was out at a Chicago bar with his teammate, Charles Barkley. That’s when a fan attacked Barkley with a knife, and Williams came to his rescue. He escaped prosecution for the same, but in 2002 he shot dead his limo driver. Williams claimed it was a mistake, but it landed him more significant problems. He was sentenced to jail for first-degree manslaughter down to five years for aggravated assault.
