After having a bad season throughout, Russell had strong things to say in regards to a question that was asked by a journalist. With numerous topics being discussed and questions being asked in the interview with Westbrook, there came a point when a journalist asked Russell ”if the playoff seem far from reach… keeping in mind the performance and record Lakers have this season”.

Russel had a straight to the point reply to this question, saying “It doesn’t really matter… when you get to the playoffs, it’s always 0-0” to which a follow up was asked if this remains the mentality of the entire team, to which Russell replied, “that’s a question you will have to ask everyone individually, but [personally] that’s how I feel, and when you get to the playoffs, it doesn’t really matter”

There are a plethora of reasons as to why the Lakers and specifically Russell Westbrook are being asked such questions, lets get into the depths of that.

Russell Westbrook and LA Lakers this season

Los Angeles Lakers’ Power Trio

This season has been unexpectedly bad for the Lakers, which on paper remains a super-team, but in practicality has performed in a way which can be termed nothing less than disappointing.

Everyone including the Lakers’ fans and haters expected them to have a phenomenal season, piecing up almost every team they would face in the entire season, and that was due to the presence of names bigger than the sport itself.

With LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook in your team accompanied by players like Dwight Howard, DeAndre Jordan, Carmelo Anthony, Trevor Ariza etc. it is expected of you to perform above the normal standards, if not win all the games. But the Lakers are far from having a clean record, standing 9th in the Western Conference, with a 24-27 record, which doesn’t really go along with their standards.

The performance by Russel Westbrook for the Lakers has been nothing short dismaying as well, with him averaging 18.9 points, 7.8 rebounds and 7.7 assists this season, he hasn’t been able to help the team in any shape or form in most of the matches, while also being very inconsistent in the shooting department.

Westbrook has only been able to have commendable performances in the matches where LeBron was absent, also raising questions whether he is made for the Lakers’ team, or if LeBron’s presence is a hinderance to other players, which for now remain unanswered.

Change In Lakers’ Approach

With all being said and done, the Lakers need a miracle to put them in the position to qualify for the playoffs. The Lakers currently rank 9th in the Western Conference, standing right behind LA Clippers, highlighting their narrow chances of qualifying for the playoffs, which many people feel isn’t possible at this point.

To make an exceptional comeback, Lakers need to change their entire strategy and probably the way they approach matches to say the least.

The attitude and approach displayed by Russell Westbrook seems right at this point, which implies that the Lakers won’t carry around the terrible season record in the playoffs, and will have a fresh start, which can be the perfect opportunity for them to turn the tide around for themselves.

The situation they are in also emphasizes on the fact that this doesn’t have to be an effort by a sole player, but the entire team, as at this point and at such a high level, only one player performing for the entire team won’t take them any further from where they already are. The Lakers need a miracle at this point, and post the miracle, a truce with their situation, learning from it, and then moving forward, but what’s also to be focused on if the Lakers will be able to make it to the Playoffs, which to say the least, is an interesting situation.
