The Figo Affair (El Caso Fio), a Netflix original documentary, will follow the infamous 2000 transfer of Luis Figo from Barcelona to Real Madrid. Real Madrid broke the football transfer record for a player when they snatched the Portugal international winger away from their Camp Nou rivals in a move that was both surprising and contentious.
By paying his €62 million release clause, the almost impossible was accomplished, shocking the football world and ushering in a new age of Galactico spending at the Bernabeu.
Meanwhile, Figo faced harsh criticism from Barcelona supporters, which peaked the following October during El Clasico at Camp Nou. Every time he had the ball, banners encircled the stadium branding him “Judas” and “scum,” and he received ferocious jeers. During the game, he was hit with a variety of objects, though the infamous event in which a pig’s head was thrown at him didn’t happen until 2002.
In contrast, Netflix will go into the history of the transfer in “The Figo Affair,” for which they spoke to the main characters in the transfer. This includes Figo himself, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and Barcelona counterpart Joan Gaspart.

David Tryhorn and Ben Nicholas, who collaborated on the Netflix documentary biography Skin, have directed The Figo Affair, a Spanish-language documentary produced in association with Pitch Productions.
“After the success of SkinBen and I were delighted to partner with Netflix again on The Figo Affair,” Tryhorn said. “It’s increasingly hard to find sports documentaries that are saying something new, that aren’t simply biographies or histories of sporting successes, so we believe The Figo Affair is unique. Focussing on the transfer rather than Figo’s career, the film informs us about truth, greed, morality, and the inner workings of the world’s most popular sport.“
“We were delighted that all those involved in the deal were willing to participate in full. Everyone, from Florentino Perez to Pep Guardiola, was generous with their time but Luis Figo was particularly accommodating, desperate as he was to finally set the record straight after two decades of avoiding the question of his transfer.” Starting on August 25, The Figo Affair will be accessible on Netflix Espana.
