Jannik Sinner has inched closer to defending his US Open title. On Monday (September 1), he claimed his fastest Grand Slam win by dismantling Alexander Bublik 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 in the fourth round in an hour and 21 minutes.
He also avenged his Halle Open’s second-round defeat and improved his head-to-head record to 4-2. Sinner is bidding to win his third title of the season following his victory at the Australian Open (defending his crown by beating Alexander Zverev) and at Wimbledon (beat Carlos Alcaraz).
Apart from these titles, the 24-year-old also reached the finals of the Italian Open, French Open, and the Cincinnati Masters, losing the first two to Alcaraz; in Cincinnati, Sinner was forced to give the walkover to the five-time Grand Slam champion. If Sinner wins the US Open, he will become the first man after Roger Federer (2008) to defend the title at Flushing Meadows. Last year, Sinner breezed past home favorite Taylor Fritz.
Following the match against Bublik, as Sinner was signing autographs and clicking selfies, a fan on Arthur Ashe Stadium could be seen touching his bag. A security official seemed to give him a warning also.

Sinner will face compatriot Lorenzo Musetti next. Musetti, who beat Spanish player Jaume Munar in the previous round, trails 0-2 in the head-to-head matchups against the four-time Grand Slam champion. While Sinner will be playing his third US Open quarterfinal, Musetti has reached the stage for the first time in his career. Musetti, a two-time Grand Slam semifinalist, has one singles title under his belt.
Denis Shapovalov says Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz can be vulnerable
Sinner is also vulnerable, claimed Denis Shapovalov after his third-round clash with the first seed. The Canadian ace took the first set off Sinner, but that was the only damage he could do. At the press conference later, the 26-year-old said that though Sinner and his arch-rival Alcaraz have become nearly invincible, even they can suffer defeats because of strong performance by their opponents.

I mean, it’s really tough to say. There’s so many great players in the draw and you definitely have to probably give it to him or Carlos, the two favourites. Obviously, they’ve played, I think, almost every finals together the last few months.
Sinner has tied the head-to-head record over Shapovalov to 1-1. Shapovalov also faced Alcaraz twice but lost both matches.
So most likely you know the chances are it could be one of these two, but to be honest, there’s a lot of great players. I mean, I was able to put pressure on Jannik today, so who says that another player can’t do the same?
Denis Shapovalov added
Sinner and Alcaraz are projected to face each other in the final. The former trails 5-9 in the head-to-head matchups against the Spaniard. Alcaraz, also a one-time US Open champion (beat Casper Ruud in 2022), will face Jiri Lehecka next. He holds a 2-1 head-to-head edge over the Czech ace.
Sinner and Alcaraz are battling for the World No.1 spot. The World No.2 has achieved the most on the men’s tour this year, reaching eight finals and winning six titles, including at the French Open. He has already surpassed Sinner on the live rankings with 9,940 points. Sinner has 9,880 points.
