Famous tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg sparked a social media debate about equal pay in women’s and men’s tennis after sharing a tweet regarding both US Open finals. This debate has been going on for many years with current and former players.

In his tweet, Rothenberg shared videos of the men’s and women’s US Open finals. The women’s final had 1.7 million views, while the men’s final had around 688,000 views.

There could be a reason for the difference in views, as the men’s final took place 24 hours after the women’s final, so the numbers may still be catching up. However, the majority agreed that women’s tennis has become more attractive lately.

Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner were the women’s and men’s US Open champions, respectively, and both received $3.6 million in prize money.

Tennis fans claim WTA to be more attractive than ATP at the US Open

The debate between the prize money of the WTA and ATP has been going on for a long time. However, after Ben Rothenberg’s tweet, the majority of the fans sided with WTA being a more attractive property as compared to the ATP at the US Open.

Aryna Sabalenka has shared her views on equal pay for players in different tennis competitions. After her win in Cincinnati, she argued that it is unfair for male and female tennis players to receive different prize money.

Sabalenka acknowledged that ATP players might be physically stronger, but she emphasized that WTA players also work hard and give their best in every tournament. At the 2024 Cincinnati Open, Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner both won the singles titles. However, the Italian earned $1,049,460, while the Belaurisian received $524,730.

Yet, as US Open champions, both were awarded $3.6 million. Other notable events, such as Wimbledon, also believe in equal prize money for both men and women.
