Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal will partner in the men’s doubles at the Paris Olympics for the first time in their careers. Ahead of the event which will kickstart on July 27, Alcaraz said that he sees himself as the newbie in their partnership.

Alcaraz has been in scintillating form this season, which is in stark contrast to Nadal’s fortunes. However, the 38-year-old is a legend of the game, especially at the Roland Garros courts where he has lifted the French Open title 14 times. He has also won two gold medals at the Olympics, first in the singles at Beijing 2008 and then in the doubles at Rio 2016.

Alcaraz, who is set to make his Olympic debut this year, has the pace and energy to come out on top against any opponent. This season, he remains the only player to have beaten Jannik Sinner twice without a loss and recently claimed his fourth Grand Slam title at the Wimbledon Championships.

However, he is staying grounded ahead of the Summer Games and has acknowledged that he will be partnering with a very experienced player.

He has already experienced the Games and won two gold medals. I am the newbie, so I have to keep my mouth shut and listen to him.

Carlos Alcaraz said (via ABC)

When asked if he is constantly in touch with Nadal, he said they speak a little but will communicate more often once they are in the French capital.

Not much. He’s also doing his thing, we’re doing ours. We talk very little, but when we’re at the Games we’ll talk about that doubles and above all, how we’re going to do it.

Carlos Alcaraz added

Alcaraz will hope to win the singles gold medal and bring joy to his countrymen and women, just like he did at Wimbledon. He and Nadal will also be favorites to win the men’s doubles competition.
