Carlos Alcaraz, who won his maiden title this year in Umag, is the top seed in the tournament and he has played like one in the round robin phase.

The 18-year-old Spaniard started the tournament with a straight sets win over Denmark’s Holger Rune and then scored another three set win in the next match against Brandon Nakashima.

Already assured of a semifinal place, he went into the final match of the group phase and made it three out of three by beating Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo on Thursday. The victory made Alcaraz the youngest player to earn 30 tour-level wins in a season since Rafael Nadal went 30-17 in 2004 when he was 18. Alcaraz is also 30-17 entering the semifinals.

Playing his first ATP main draw tournament on hard courts, Sebastian Baez made it to the semifinals of the tournament with a straight sets win over Hugo Gaston in a do or die final group encounter on Thursday.

The 20-year-old Argentine had begun the tournament with a challenging victory over Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti, but lost the second match to Sebastian Korda. He needed a victory in the last match over Gaston, who had stretched both the other players to five sets before going down in the first two matches. The World no.111 eventually got the win and finished second in Group B, behind Korda.

This contest seems to be an one-sided affair titled in the favor of Carlos Alcaraz who came into this tournament as an undisputed favorite for the title. However, Argentina’s Sebastian Baez is here for a reason that comes from his game until now.

Baez is a newcomer and to take on Carlos Alcaraz will be a very difficult task.
